aoa,
i have read the criticism on maududi sahab in quite detail and i agree with it. But Allah knows best. while i understand we must not read his books, but why exactly are the practicing muslims in pakistan (or the indian supporters of a muslim government governed by shariah) not united in their political support for JI? what exactly is wrong with it? do they not advocate Rajm and qata yad (stoning and cutting of hands)? do they not speak against fahashi in society? do they not call for a ban on usury? do they not call for a proper Islamic education system from grade 1 till post graduate integrated into the secular education setup? please note: i am not making a case for them, the questions above are simply questions. i am asking about their policies. also has anyone read "Pakistan and Islam: ethinicty and ideology" by Hamza alavi and A Murder of History in Pakistan by K.K. Aziz? what i know of JI are that they criticized Muslim League for not advocating shariah in pakistan yet it was fooling people in name of two nation theory. as we know, the notion that secular muslims and secular hindus are a separate nation is hypocritical. but my point is isnt what all politically correct individuals such as Ml. Azam Tariq have said?Shariah in pakistan. so why is it that they should not be supported politically? |

is there a difference? Yes my brother, there is a major difference. Jamaat-e-Islami started out with the call for Muslims to take up the collective cause of establishing the rule of Allah (SWT) and that it cannot only be done through following the Sunnah (see his Khutbaat in the 1940’s) where a young Maulana Maududi (RA) is at his firey best. His call is for Muslims to return to Islam and this is the time period where young Ulamah like Shaykh (Maulana) Manzoor Naumani (RA) & Shaykh (Maulana) Abdul-Hasan Ali Nadwi (RA) also started to galvanise towards him. He opposed the creation of Pakistan because he considered establishment of Allah (SWT)'s rule to be foremost and considered Muslim league to be composed of Muslims who were not fully practising. After the creation of Pakistan, Jamaa-e-Islami (Pakistan) thought that they can implement Shariah through political process. Then came the 1950’s when Jamaa-e-Islami (Pakistan) switched courses and joined politics and started campaigning and this is the time when many people left and criticised the Jamaat. This is the darkest hour for Jamaat as most of its vocal supporters and admirers left. We are discussing this matter on a hardcore Deobandi forum and YET I must say that Jamaat-e-Islami and Maulana Maududi (RA) served the Deen of Allah (SWT) with distinction specially in revival of Sunnah amongst university going Muslims of our countries and there can be no doubt. He also made errors in his books and his tone is often very sharp against the Sahaba-e-Kiraam but his and Jamaat-e-Islami'sbiggest blunder is to enter politics for which they are still paying! Due to his sharp tone I have NEVER been able to like his works and it has taken me years to actually get passed his style of writing and actually read! I was never part of Jamiat or Jamaat and not a big fan of Maulana Maududi (RA) but there is a difference of night and day between his writings from 1940's and Part 1 of Khilafat-O-Mulookiyaat for which the Deobandees generally castigate him. |

actually moudodi was the founder of JI.. nd majority of the muslims in pakistan dont like him nd even some of thm consider him a fasiq or shia due to his book "khilafat o maloqiat"...so personally i thnk ths is the only reason yet they fail to achieve any big success in politics.. nd i m sure whn they wil take a clear stance against moudodi .. JI will become the most popular jamat..

I dont think majority of Muslims in Pakistan know much about maulana maududi, just that he's a controversial figure people should stay away from, and thats what the people keep repeating. |

Reminds me of the Quraish telling other Arabs to not even listen to the Prophet, so much so that Tufayl ibn Amr stuffed his ears with cotton. And no, I'm not comparing Maududi with the Prophet, but just saying take the good, and leave the bad. A lot of my family which did not pray and were complete secularists became practicing because of his books, but it was hard to get them to read the books in the first place because of how much they abhorred him without any good reason. how many people are capable of doing that themselves?you are assuming everyone is fully knowledgeable about Islam to read a new text , judge it on islamic texts and laws, take the good and leave the bad. the example of the Quraish does not apply here in the slightest. there is no question of good or bad in the Propeht (PBUH)'s teachings. it is Islam |

It's not like Maulana Maududi's books are filled with a mixture of good and bad. His book on hijab and purdah is all good, book on jihad praised by Syed Sulaiman Nadwi, Tafhim al Quran covers only basics of Islam. Just don't read Khilafat-o-Malukiat. No genius needed for that. how do you expect laymen to sift the good from the bad in tafheem? |
