'US doesn't protect its female soldiers'
Wednesday, 5 January 2011 Washington, January 05: One in three women in the US military say they have been sexually assaulted, while numerous cases of rape go unreported and the perpetrators rarely stand trial, according to an anti-war group. "It is very disconcerting to know that one out of three women in the military say that they have been sexually assaulted, and then to know that these same soldiers are deployed overseas in places like Afghanistan and Iraq, where they, unfortunately, are bound to continue their abuse of women," Medea Benjamin, the co-founder of the anti-war group CODEPINK, told Press TV on Tuesday. Benjamin, who is also the founding director of the international human rights organization Global Exchange, also expressed deep concern about US soldiers' treatment of Iraqis and Afghans during their missions overseas. She stated that very few of the US soldiers accused of sexual misconduct have been prosecuted, with figures released by the Department of Defense showing that in fiscal year 2009 there were 3,230 reports of sexual assault, an increase of 11 percent over the previous year. "Often times they [rapist soldiers] are deployed in very rural places where there is not a lot of oversight of what they are doing, and just like here in the United States, there are few cases where the soldiers who have been accused of raping women overseas have actually been brought to trial," Benjamin said. The Pentagon recently reported that the number of sexual assaults at US military academies increased 64 percent in 2010. In 2009, a Pentagon report also pointed to an 11 percent rise in sexual assaults in the military over the previous year. In December, the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups filed a federal lawsuit against the Pentagon for putting a lid on the exact number of sex crimes committed by service members within the United States military. The Pentagon has consistently refused to release records that fully document the issue of sexual harassment in the US military and how it is handled. -Agencies |

most of the people in the US army are boneheads who can't get better jobs...and i don't think sexual abuse stops at the men in the army...we have seen what the women in the army also get up to in places like Iraq...sick and twisted Sure, some join because they can't get a better job. But most join for various other reasons; to make it a career, to save up money for college, or to learn a skill to use after they get back out into civilian life. Such as, vehicle mechanic, military police, medical personal, air traffic controller, etc. Myself, I was in the U.S. Army and used the G.I. Bill benefits when I got out to attend and graduate from a university with a B.A. |

I believe that 1 in 3 statistic is totally bogus. Are you just replying for the sake of it? Do you feel that you are more qualified to speak on anything related to the US/Christianity simply by virtue of you living there? and even if that means making mighty claims without an shred of evidence? I felt sorry for you on some of the other threads, but I'm begining to change my mind. |

Again you are TOO STUPID to articulate a response. You dismiss it as propaganda by radical feminists and YET US Army has an official program to counter it... btw Is referring to me, your muslim brother, as "Dimwit" appropriate on the day of Jummah; or basically any other day for that matter? |

What you believe, my friend, is totally irrelevant. These people have a rabid radical agenda against the military. So I give these people zero credibility. As for Christianity; I was a Christian for many years and have even preached in churches. So I feel very confident when I post something about the subject. |

Bismillah Ir-Rehman Ir-Raheem
Asslam-Alaikum Brother Revert2001: May Allah keep you, me, and all of us on the Straight Path and place peace in our hearts. Insha-Allah, I have added articles that you may peruse at your leisure Insha-Allah that do shed light on this issue a bit better: One is an 1996 abstract from the American Psychological Association, as unfortunately, I do not have access to the original publication: The prevalence of physical and sexual abuse in women veterans seeking care at a veterans affairs medical center." The other is a 2010 New York Times article titled, "Sex Assault Reports Rise in Military." The other is a ThinkProgress article published today titled, "‘Invisible War’ Documentary Examines Military Sexual Assault — And The Cover-Up." Also, I wanted to share the New York Times review of the book, Black Hearts: One Platoon's Descent into Madness in Iraq's Triangle of Death, titled "Death Squad." Brother, the 14-year old girl at the center of the events haunts me as a disembodied specter ever since I chanced upon her picture in an online article. Brother, I do understand your defense of the U.S. military. However, Brother, I respectfully disagree with your opinion. I do so because I cannot help but take into consideration the fact that most rapes are never reported due to the surrounding "culture of shame," irrespective of religion, national culture, race, sexual orientation, etc.; so, the 1 out of 3 statistic, in my humble opinion, might not be inaccurate, and of course, Allah knows best. However, what I do know is this: When I used to be a child, bad men comprised of "monsters" that did bad things. As I grew up, I realized people whom we might consider traditionally or otherwise "good men" also do bad things. It is simply a matter of the wrong intention meeting the right opportunity or opportunities. Please forgive me if I said anything to offend, as that is not my intention. May Allah keep us in His mercy. If I have said anything good and true, it is from Allah, and anything other than that is my own mistake. |

and i bet a large percentage are just perverts and pedophiles who join so they can go and abuse people in foreign lands where they can easily get away with it even if they are caught because the lifes of these foreigners don't have the same value as the life of an american btw most U.S. soldiers are never deployed to a combat zone because they are in support roles. |

You are way off base sister. fahrenheit 911 showed what you state above is true its not about war or being a soldier its the way the army recruiters glamorised the soldier for youre country image i have personally met and had dinner with an ex guantanamo guard in leeds ,many soldiers had no idea what they were getting to and i think its very admirable many vets now openly expose warcrimes even their own, and become antiwar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akm3nYN8aG8 |

from what ive researched many people joined the army when there was no war or postings And I have nothing but admiration for those who choose it as a career. Every nation has some form of military. It's the rulers and politicians who misuse the soldiers. |

warriors? lol gimme a break they are merely mindless puppets on a string who dont even know what or who they are killing for And they are Not mindless puppets on a string as you imply. They are just regular people who have chosen to be in the military for various reasons. Your characterization of them is quite bizarre to say the least. |
