So should a muslim read a translation of the quran or should he/she read a tafseer? And if so which one should s/he read? and if not then why not?
What is the best translation/tafseer to read for a lay muslim. I would apreciate your comments. Jazakallah |

If you want detailed tafsir then go for Maariful Quran. You can download scanned pdf here: http://www.islamibayanaat.com/EMQ.htm . or you can just read online: http://islamicstudies.info/maarif/
If you want translation with short commentaries/explanations, then you should definitely try Abdullah Yusuf Ali's work. It's available here: http://www.quran4u.com/Tafsiraya/Index.htm . I personally read this most of the time. If I want to read further on something, I go to Maariful Quran. |

I came across a translation of The Quran Majeed by Mufti Taqi Usmani today. I think it is different to the translation of Mariful quran. This seems to be translated by Mufti Saheb himself, i was wondering if anyone has read it? |

This seems to be translated by Mufti Saheb himself, i was wondering if anyone has read it? Later on, Mufti Taqi Usmani Sahab re-arranged his translation and published as a separate work. Anyway, let's see what Mufti Taqi Usmani Sahab himself points out regarding Qur'an translations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GaqDqp0Ruo |

Ma'ariful Qur'an hasn't been written by Mufti Taqi Usmani Sahab, but rather by his father, Mufti Shafi' Usmani Sahab (rahimahullah). In its english translation, Mufti Taqi Usmani Sahab worked on the translation of the Qur'an into English, and thus the translation of the verses in the English translation of Ma'ariful Qur'an is by Mufti Taqi Usmani Sahab, while the rest of the work is by Mufti Shafi' Usmani Sahab. Are there anymore bayaans like this? |

The tafseer I have contains both the Arabic and the translation so it should be sufficient. That said, since the tafseer is very large (8 volumes) and not easy to reference, a translation is good to have on hand for this purpose. Also, it is beneficial to have an Arabic Qur'an for recitations and I would imagine (correct me if I'm wrong), to have the pure word void of any translation or tafseer. |
