Default Shaikh abdul salam rustami - Salafi?
My cousin who is a salafi ( May Allah guide him) has said this shaykh was a deobandi who taught in karachi for 50 years, then became a salafi. Can anyone verify this?

Shaykh Abdul Sallam Rustami is a great scholar of this era.He is on the right and blessed path of Salaf us Salih Masha'Allah. He resides in Rustam,Swabi these days . I am not sure about the 50 years period but its true that he left Deobandism much late. The Shaykh seems to be well above 80 now. May Allah preserve him , Ameen.

As salaam alaikum wa rahmatullah,

Shaykh Abdus Salaam was a Hanafi Mamaati who is an expert in Tafseer. His Tafseer is said to be one of the best ever and, yes, it is true that he is a Salafi, walhamdulillah.

So he wasn't a Deobandi?

Both Hayaati and mamati claim to be the real Deobandis and real Hanafis.

Both Hayaati and mamati claim to be the real Deobandis and real Hanafis.
The Real Deobandis are the Akabireen. What the Akabireen (Rahimahumullah) stood for in regards to the Deobandi Maslak we can never match hence we are not even worth the Dal on Deobandi. Let alone ascribe ourself to their Maslak. Their strict adherence to the Qur'an and Sunnah is unparalleled by any claimants of today be they Hayaati or Mamaati.

So if you want to use a backbone to say who is 'Deobandi' refer to the Akabireen.

Deobandism has not be a disciplined monolithic tradition. According to my knowledge , Shaykh Ul Quran Ghulam Ullah khan Rahimahullah was a proclaimed Mamati-Deobandi. Then you have Maulana Manzoor Nau'mani. The Hayati-Mamati stuff has been inconsistent on the level of Akabireen as well.

Mamaatis are not Deobandis.
Mamati ceased to be Deobandi since the Shaykh joined the Salafis? Just search for "Hayati mamati" on this forum and you will find out many hardcore Mamatis here as well , Colonel_hardstone happens to be one though he does not like labeling himself a mamati Deobandi. Shaykh Abdul Hay Lukhnavi Deobandi also happened to be a mamati ie who believes that Sayyidna Muhammad sws is alive in Barzakh not in his grave in Madina , unlike the hayati Deobandis who believe that Sayyidna Muhammad sws is alive in his grave as he was alive in this world and he hears the Sallam which is offered at his grave by himself and responds back.

Is askimam.org/mufti desai hayati?
Ambiyaa and other chosen servants of Allah are alive in their graves. However this life is life of the Barzakh and not of this world. http://www.askimam.org/fatwa/fatwa.p...53f9380f39b7d9

After my long year expereinces, i can say mamatis are obviously not deobandis. they are offshoot of salafis.

No offense and I'm just asking a question because of my ignorance. I am assuming that the only thing that separates the two "groups" is the belief in question and therefore Sh. Abdul Salam Rustami is still thoroughly a Hanafi and hadith scholar along the Deobandi undestsanding (being that no other issue was raised other than this) ... Is it really this one secondary aqida issue that people are distinguishing "real" from "fake" Deobandis?

If ahlus sunnah wal jama'ah believe Rasulullah is alive in his grave, then what's the difference in the belief of mamatis? Is it semantics and phraseology at play or something else? I never got the rundown on the beleif of mamatis anyway.

I am unable to post links to old threads as Google at my side is having some issues with SF. You can search for an old thread titled "attacks on a sufi - justified?" and read the references given there. There is a pro-mamati position Fatwa from Dar Ul Uloom Deoband posted by colonel there.

Shaykh Abdul Sallam Rustami is a "full blown" Salafi now. The members are discussing Hayati-Mamati issue in isolation.

He was originally a Panj Piri, who were a group of extreme Mamatis who were Hanafi in fiqh and Salafi in Aqida.

Now he is Ahlul Hadith in fiqh and still Salafi in Aqida.

His followers glorify him excessively, calling him Shaikh al-Islam. In addition, they are supposedly quite violent (I can't confirm that last bit).

In other words, his lectures and books should be treated with caution.

A Salafi once tried fooling me by giving me his lectures and claiming that he was a Hanafi Deobandi. But his lectures are just the typical Salafi propaganda you can hear at any of their masajid.

Darrusalam publishes his tafsir (which is in Pashtu), so I'm sure it has plenty of exposure, but I've never heard anything about it, either positive or negative, from anyone other than the previously mentioned Salafi who tried deceiving me into thinking he was a Hanafi.

It's funny because everyone seems to have a different definition for what constitutes a Mamaati.

We have the Panj Piris, who are said to be fully Salafi in Aqida.

Then, we have those who are supposed to be Maturidi except for the issue of the Prophets' lives in the grave, in which they take the Salafi position.

And finally, we have those who are supposed to be Maturidi except for some strange belief they are supposed to have. I can't remember the exact details, but it was something like them believing that the Prophets were alive in the grave in a new body.

So I think until we can precisely define what exactly is the belief of a Mamati, we'll be stuck with this confusion.
