All scholars should be sociologists. Brother Marc Manley is one student of knowledge whose integrated social sciences into studying Islam. I notice Christians seminaries invest a lot of energy into studying sociology and I notice many of the great minds in psychology and sociology were Jewish. Mostly because they had to negotiate with difficult social circumstances, stigma, prejudice and negotiating different identities in changing times. But Ibn Khaldun, didn't have those motives, he was a pure academic, for the sake of the knowledge and for the sake of discovery.
One way to keep Ibn Khaldun's legacy alive today is to help preserve the dying languages of the world, by understanding one's mother tongue, especially if its a very specific or unique language. |
