I have read Shaykh Nuh's book "Sea without Shore" which explains the movements and things done during the group dhikr (the 'Hadra') and it's not really 'dancing' as such, and there are loads of Hanafis in the Shadhili tariqa and it isn't anything that contradicts the shari'ah as far as I'm aware.

Well , I do not no how you see this as dancing. the Hadra isnt dancing Consequently, it will be permissible for the Shuyūkh and Mūrīds who follow the Shāfi‘ī Madhhab to participate in the hadrah. On the contrary, it will not be permissible for the Shuyūkh and Murīds of the Hanafī Madhhab to participate in the dancing or swaying of the hadrah since no form of dancing is permitted in the Madhhab unless one is overtaken by an uncontrollable state of ecstasy. http://www.askimam.org/fatwa/fatwa.p...964440d67f7eaf |

Shaykh Faraz Rabbani states,
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & Compassionate Yes, the hadra is in itself permitted, as writings of major Hanafi authorities make clear. Among the imams of the Hanafi school who have specifically permitted it are Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Kamal Basha, Imam Shurunbulali, Sayyidi Abd al-Ghani al-Nablusi, `Allama Abd al-Qadir `Isa—who cites proofs for it from the major Hanafi reference works, including Ibn Abidin—and Imam Ashraf Ali al-Tahanawi in his Imdad al-Fatawa (5.151). It is simply one way of fulfilling the general sunna of group dhikr, the general and unconditional encouragement for which is authentically established through numerous hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Faraz Rabbani. Also, Shaykh Muhammad Al Yaqoubi is Hanafi and does the Hadra... |

The inherent permissibility or impermissibility of some of these exercises will rest upon the differences of the various Madhāhib since some of these practices cross the boundary of a mere internal metaphysical sphere to the externally physical; thus, falling under the jurisdiction of the Fuqahā’. To present a brief example, the practice of hadrah, a type of spiritual bodily movement similar to swaying that some refer to dancing coupled with loud dhikr, is permissible for the followers of the Shāfi‘ī Madhhab since according to their ‘Ulamā and Madhhab dancing is permissible with certain conditions. Jazakallah khayrun for posting the link to that article. It seems that AskImam really broadening their perspectives. A few years ago I don't think that fatwa would have been posted, rather there would probably have just been a predictable condemnation of dancing, leaving us laymen to assume that hadra (or dancing) would have been unequivocally haram and therefore we would have been forced to assume that all of these sufis practicing hadra were in error. Subhanallah issues of fiqh are never as simple as they may seem. I'm not a member of any tariqa but i find the naqshbandi tariqa most interesting and inshallah one day i will find a naqshbandi shaykh. |

As-salamu ´alaykum,
My humble advice would be to look for a Shaykh with whom you find munasabat (congeniality), as he will be your instructor on the path. Tasawwuf is living, and you will find that many accomplished Shuyoukh will apply the principles of a certain Tariqa rather freely, according to his own experience, to serve the spiritual needs of the Murid. wa'Llahu a'lam |
