 Valima after 17 years
 There is a famous pakistani cricketer who held his Valima after 17 years. Is this permisable? encouraged, discouraged? |

He is from Saeed Anwar, Inzamam Ul Haq, Saqlain Mustaq, Mohammad Yousuf circle in terms of age, playing career. I am sure he consulted with the Muftis in Pakistan and the Elders at Raiwind Markaz.

mufti ibn adam in his fiqh of marriage course states that valima is within two days, otherwise its some other feast. He mentions arabs had lots of feasts with different names for different occasions and valima technically has to happen within 2 days.

He mentions arabs had lots of feasts with different names for different occasions and valima technically has to happen within 2 days.  ... it is a tradition of the west where they "re-enact their vows" .. basically have a party and trade their exchange of "will you marry me and I love you" .. I am not comparing the two, but an event such as this, whereby many many people from Pakistan that love the person due to his being a popular cricketer turned devout worshipper ... people will now follow his tradition .. also people are already "mocking" this .. so if it is indeed something permisable, then they are mocking the sunnah .. if its not permisable, it needs to be clarified.. can a scholar please post some feedback on this? |

It is stated in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya: “There is nothing wrong in inviting people the next day after consummation or the day after. After that, marriage and Walima celebrations will come to an end.” (5/343) It has also been reported from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) that he stated: “Walima on the first day is confirmed (haq), and on the second day, it is good (ma’ruf), and on the third day, it is showing off.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, no. 3738) Although scholars mention that if there is a need, such as not being able to invite everybody on one day, then it will not be wrong to invite them on separate days. http://www.central-mosque.com/fiqh/walima.htm |

Assalamu alaykum
There are special circumstances here. May be this person has not called the poor in his valima (the hadeeth says the worst valima is one where wealthy are called and the needy poor are pushed out), may be there was dance and mixing of women in his early marriage ceremony. This brother has repented and did his valima the sunnah way. So for special circumstances special ijihadi rules apply. |
