i met many people in america who used to be NOI and later became muslims. they said that when the joined NOI they thought they were actually becoming muslims and did not know any better.

so its a lacking on our part that they were not shown the true islam.

That's exactly what happened to me. When I was in college I read the Quran and wanted to be a muslim, but the only "muslims" around were the Nation. So I joined and it took me about 6-7 years before I was guided to Islam.

As-salaamu Alaikum,

I am 20 years old and in college in the United States. I grew up in the Nation of Islam. I never learned to pray properly and have never been to Jummah prayer. Nor have I learned alot of the basic Arabic words that every muslim should know because this has not been adressed at the mosque that I went to. A week ago, I went to I masjid for the first time in my life and I began reading and studying the Qur'an on my own. I found resources to guide me as I am learning to pray and to be a practicing muslim. I never took Shahadah and Insha-Allah, I will take it very soon, within the next couple of weeks.
I don't know how to feel about the fact that I thought I was learning all I needed to know until I stepped outside and saw that no other muslim in the world could understand why I did not know how to make salat when I told them I was muslim. I am going to start going to a new masjid but I worry about my family and the people that I grew up with in the Nation of Islam misunderstanding me and thinking that I am misguided. With Allah's (SAW) guidance I know I am making the right decission in learning how to pray and starting to wear the hijab. I got some funny looks from the sisters of the Nation of Islam mosque the first time I wore my hijab wrapped in the traditional style instead of in a bun at the back of my neck(which exposed curls of my hair). I would like any words of advice on what I should do because I feel that I have missed out on something very precious in my growing up. Also, I am not familiar with joining a masjid where the brothers and sisters pray at certain times, remove their shoes, and anything else that I may not know about, so I would like some pointers on that, as well as what I should do or say when I am ready to take my shahadah. Insha-Allah someone out there will help me to figure this out by the grace of Allah (SAW).
-Thank you to anyone offering your words
-As-salaamu alaikum, Sister Hannah

My wife and I went through a similar situation. We didn't grow up in the NOI but we joined in our late teens. And it can be overwhelming realizing how much there is that you weren't taught and how far from the reality of Islam the teaching you were taught are. Which city are you in? Does the college you go to have a MSA? One of the most beneficial things (knowledge wise) for me was learning as much as you can about Prophet Muhammad :saws: This was one of the best resources for me http://www.islamicbookstore.com/a4749.html . The most important thing (in terms of practice) is your salaat. Do everything you can to pray your salat on time. What resources are you using to learn your salat?
As far as the mosque and your family goes, most will not understand and will feel somehow that you betrayed the minister and have become a "hypocrite". Like sister "rahma" mentioned going to a WD masjid may be a good transition point, though I didn't go that route myself. To say your shahadah you simply say la ilaha illa allah muhammad rasul allah. Learn the basic elements of belief to guard your new found faith. This forum is a good resource, especially starting out, with a lot of helpful people, ask any questions you have here and you will tend to get good answers.

Salaamu alaikum
muhammadnur. I am in Boston right now until I finish college, then Insha'Allah I can return to Chicago after I graduate. I just found out about the MSA at my college last year. I met a sister who is the secretary of my college's MSA and she was very kind and welcoming. I wish I had known about it earlier but Alhumdullilah, I am a member now. I am on summer break so I will go to my first MSA meeting this september when I get back to school. I am not familliar with WD Muhammad's mosques in the New England area, the first time I went to a masjid, it was the Islamic Cultural Center and everyone was so kind and welcoming so I will attend this one Insha'Allah. I looked online first for resources but Insha'Allah I will purchase a prayer book tomorrow from the masjid so that I can carry it around with me. Thank you brother. Jazakullah.

Sister AlHannah,

There should be programs at the ISBCC for new converts and sisters. That place is very busy

There are also other Masaajid in that area that hold programs exclusively for sisters.

It looks like Masjid al Quran in Dorchester is a former NOI temple.

Originally named Muhammad's Mosque No. 11, the mosque today includes Africans, Arabs, South Asians, and others, attesting to its evolution from black nationalist stronghold to traditional Sunni mosque

...

When W. D. Mohammed succeeded his father, he abandoned the theology and black supremacist teachings but kept the black pride part and brought his followers into mainstream Islam. Under Imam Shakir Mahmoud , Muhammad's Mosque No. 11 followed along and in 1985 was renamed Masjid Al Quran. I do hope that you can get to this masjid inshaAllah. Not only does it have a tremendous history (being a place where Malcolm X taught!), tt sounds like they have many members who went through what you've current in the midst of - moving from NOI to islam alhamdulilah.

The main thing is through NOI, you finally came to Islam. Often a sincere search even with unintential wrong means, one end up reaching the straight path. So be thankful to Allah, the most sublime.
Now focus on your study and how to be a good creation of Allah that benefits muslim and nonmuslim alike and become a becon for others by inculcating wisdom, tolarence with knowledge.
Shaikh Faraz organises affordable classes http://seekersguidance.org/seminars & www.seekersdigest.org/ in USA.
Join a reputable organisation that focuses on self development and also encourages to help others. Deen does not need to packaged as a business or ism. So do things out of sincerety and you will see sincere people with love for others guiding you without inviting you to some form of ism or cult.
It is Allah who guides at the end of the day

No. The NOI is not a "new" fitnah. You can place it concepts along with the wahhabih of Saudia Arabia. For a history and understanding of the NOI you should go to www.newafricaradio.com. While you're there...spend some time and get to know Imam Warith ud deen Mohammed.
Assalam alaikum w.w..

Objection sis.. u cant place these non muslims along with the wahhabis.. the wahhabis dont practise kufr like these NOI ppl..plz understand..

Salaam sister, i am very happy to read your post mashallah and feel you are a very kind hearted sister whom allah has favoured with guidance.

I also feel the manners here in addressing you havent been great. As people of haqh (truth) we should have exemplary manners and behaviour towards people, especially a sister like yourself who has come running towards the truth with open arms.

The advice concerning taking shahada asap has two aspects to it.

1 dont take shahada untill your sure its the truth

2 when your 100% islam is the truth dont delay as you wouldnt want to die before taking shahada, the second you take shahada inshallah your Slate is wiped clean and you will be forgiven any sins until that point although you sound like a really decent sister mashallah but im sure you'll agree that we all fall into sins.

With your parents i advise not to tell them straight away. Focus on yourself first, make sure you really know where your at, study and learn from the masjid, get strong in your faith and then when you have good knowledge gently start to do dawah with your family inshallah, bring them to circles and to the masjid, bring them to break fast during ramadahn with the muslim community, show them the beauty of islam, and show them how true religion is colour blind and that black, white and everything in between can all be brothers and sisters and that our creator would never favour a people based on colour of skin, but by piety and good deeds.

I recommend this site:

Notice the two a's in islaam

Abu zakariyah i also got into islam via wu tang clan, some of them are sunnis though.

Salam Alykum,

Isn't "NOI" that group which is built upon Racism or something? They are Deviant because Islam has nothing to do with Race, A Black Man has no Superiority over a white Man nor does a White Man Have Superiority over a Black man ...That's what Islam teaches.
No brother they are the ones that believe that African Americans or blacks are the true people of Allah. They also believe that Allah is on a spaceship coming down for them one day or something. Honestly ...they are a cruel misguided joke to the beautiful faith of true Islam, but their sect is a dying one anyway, kind of a fad that is sowly going away. If I am correct, true Islam does not recognise them?
