I have some religious friends and relatives living in the UK. When I come to the UK , I see them dressed in
Sunnah clothes in day to day life. However, later I was informed that in the offices they are not allowed to wear sunnah dress. They are forced to wear official uniforms and other western dress. Is this rule widespread in the UK and other western countries ? Do you know brothers who have managed to get permission to wear sunnah dress even in the job ? Personally, I know that in the UK universities the students are allowed to wear sunnah dress. However, job-sectors may not be that liberal. Anyway, I would like to know your experience. |

What kind of office-jobs are they doing ? One of my relatives is a NHS doctor who is not allowed to wear sunnah dress during the working hours !! ![]() Really? I know someone very well who is 2 years away from being a consultant in the NHS and has always been allowed to wear his thowb and topi as an NHS doctor. He says the trick is to go to the interview dressed as you would. That way they know what to expect. ![]() |

He says the trick is to go to the interview dressed as you would. That way they know what to expect. ![]() Very true. I personally know many brothers in various professions (e.g. Principal IT Consultant, Managing Executive, Doctor, Java Developer, IT Manager, Technician, Architect, Accountant, Teacher, Admin officer, etc.). They all wear the full Sunnah attire (including amamah) to their London based offices. Masha'Allah, one of them earns more than Gordon Brown! He’ll leave his office / meetings to ensure he makes every salah in jamaat. Clear evidence of rizq minAllah. |

It's true that "freedom of religion" has restrictions for Muslims in the U.S. However, you can find a few professional jobs that do not care about your attire, for example the U.S. Patent Office. The reality is that most Westerner corporations are not open to diversity - they will not allow nor hire a brother wearing a turban/beard or a sister wearing hijab/niqab. In most cases, portraying your external (in their style) is more important for Western companies than the amount of knowledge you possess. |

Salaam, ![]() I used to work at Sears (a large department store chain), and, while they never said anything about me having a beard or folding up my pants, they constantly complained about me not tucking in my shirt. I got multiple warnings for doing so, so I finally just gave up and started tucking in my shirt (At this time I wasn't really aware of Islamic dress, so I didn't wear any sort of kufi/topi). So, while they are not very lenient with men, they do generally allow women to wear Jilbab/Abaya (two women wore them at the store I worked at), although I do not know what they'd say about the Niqab. Even then, they may have only been this lenient because the store I wroked at had many Muslims working in it (counting those that didn't practice, more than twenty), and so they were familiar with our practices, even letting us pray in Jama`ah. |

In such companies, we need to be more careful. One good advice might be that the Muslim guy should go to the interview with the formal dress with the pant above the ankle. Then if he is hired, in the first few months he should continue to wear sunnah dress and will show good behavior with his co-workers and make a campaign of winning the hearts and minds. Later gradually he will change his dress step by step -- first the cap ( topi ) , then long dress going underneath the knee and so on. What do you think about this strategy ? |

Going with Sunnah dress at the very first day may not be applicable in every company in every country. I mean, if the management in a company does not have enough knowledge about Islam , they might get panicked. If the management think that the Muslim guy's sunnah dress will prevent him to be fit into the team and thereby the team-spirit will be damaged, then they will rather not to take the risk of hiring that Muslim guy. ![]() Yes, I think this gradual strategy fits best the situation of Muslims in those countries in which people isn't used to see Muslims wearing Sunnah dress; UK is another situation, it seems! |

Unfortunately, I don't see many Muslims here in the states who follow Sunnah at all. For example, at my masjid there are maybe 150 men in congregation. Only about 10 might have facial hair at all and maybe 2 have a Sunnah beard. Even the imam is clean-shaven. Alot of my Muslim friends make fun of me because I constantly talk about how envious I am about growing a beard, but it's difficult for me because I'm half Native American Indian (Indians can't grow facial hair). Meanwhile, most Muslims at the masjid are South Asian or Middle Eastern and are blessed to be able to grow facial hair really well, but decide to be clean-shaven. It really makes me frustrated that I want to grow a Sunnah beard but am unable to because of my heritage, but other Muslims who are capable of growing Sunnah beards decide to be clean-shaven. |

The moment you apply for a job, it includes certain mode of dressing (officially and unofficialy). I personally would fire someone if one insist on wearing non unofficial dress. If they don't like it, they can find another job. It has nothing to do with sunnah but the contract employers signs. i recall my fathers disslike of some over zealot relegious muslim and is founded on their moronic notion of acceptablity. This officer in the merchent decided to dawn a thoab when there is a clear cut rule of navy outfit. http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/show...ht=#post575463 |
