Default Dogs in Islam
بسم الله و السلام ءـاـيكم,
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm confused about this topic.

I understand that a lot of Muslims are under the impression that dogs aren't permitted to be kept as pets, or are even disliked in Islam, and I've heard one theory that the angels don't come into the house of a Muslim on Laylat ul-Bara'at if there is a dog inside.

However, I'm a vegan (I don't consume, wear or use any animal products) and I'm big on animal and environmental welfare, and in my little handbook, "Animal Free Shopper", I came across a link to this website - Islamic Concern. It delves into animals and Islam, and Islam and animal welfare, and such issues, and I came across this interesting page regarding dogs and Islam.

What do you all think? Opinions? And what's your personal opinions on animal welfare, and do you have any pets? (just for discussion's sake!)

Numerous ahadith state that Angels do not enter a home where dogs or pictures [of animate beings] are kept.

edit: There is some very strange stuff on that website you posted.

yes! i adorrre animals. i dont have a dog, but i have dozens and literally dozens of other pets. i'm a big time fan of animal welfare (tho i must be honest, i'm not full vegan!) in islaam you are permitted to keep pets, as many as you like. and i think animals are just about the most wonderful creatures on the planet. lol! i dont mean to rant... i think i better stop here or else i might never end this post!

Canaries are one of the loveliest pets. You can never feel lonely with a canary.

with a male canary i never felt alone, even it was my roommate for 3 month when i was alone. He used to sing 10-15 min every hour nearly non stop and invented new tone day by day. But my bro bought 1 female 2 week ago, now the male bird doesnt even sing 10 min a day =(

I used to left the cage door open, he used to come at the door, but never bother to come out. He just stands at the door of cage and sings and look at us.

Salam Aleykum,

I like pets, I also had two dogs when I was a kid, not in our house but I kept them at my aunt's villa, so that I could enjoy them and the Angels would still enter my house...not sure if they'd enter my aunt's villa though...
Then we got THIS, which cost us a lot of money because he needs a lot of fresh meat everyday, it escaped later anyway... bloody violent bird, he never liked me.

Don't mix the male with the female cuz then he'd stop singing, don't even let them see each-other, unless for mating.

I think it's cruel to keep birds and wild animals as pets. Even with domesticated animals, de-clawing, clipping wings, spaying and neutering...I find it pretty cruel.

As br Tripoly said, better to keep them in separate cage if you want the male to keep singing. Mine sings all day long .

I've never declawed any of my cats or clipped my birds wings. My cat is spayed though, it wasn't my choice though.. she got caught by the SPCA and they don't let any cats go with spaying them.

But why keep birds in a cage? I'm sure none of you would like to be kept in a cage.

My mum has four birds. Allah knows what they are.. .. a couple of budgies ( both named after sudoku's birds) a canary and a cockatoo I think. Although they keep my gran company and everyone loves them, I think they create mounds of mess. I could never cope with all the droppings, shed feathers and whatnot. I've always felt it's cruel to keep a bird caged up. A spacious cage can never substitute the outdoors and wings are meant to be used to fly freely and gracefully, not to skip and flutter from one perch to the other.

I think cages and aquariums are totally against nature and purpose of their creation; they too deserve freedom.

I love animals...specially cats.but I am v unlucky with keeping them for long..i've had cats as pets when I was younger..what happened to my first little cat that my unlce had gifted me was terrible. I was getting ready to go to school and I was unaware that my cat had been playing with the curtains..I trampled its neck in my haste accidently...his tounge came out and eyes popped out too.We took him to a vet but the vet said nothing can be done as he's got severe damages..I felt soo bad and so sad as it all happened because of me..he was such an adorable cat..he was suffering till night till his rooh was taken..he was breathing v heavily. we all stayed beside the cat (reciting) hoping for some improvement but it died which was better than the pain he was under going.Few months later I got another lovely cat and it was there with me for 6 years..I was really attached to it just like a family member..it was unbearable when it got lost. The third cat i've had was female..alhamdulillah nothing happened to her,but we had to give it away when we shifted our home.Having a pet is really nice but losing them is the sad part.
I don't like the idea of having birds at home..I feel sorry when they are caged.Well...having a dog is a biiig no no

true. i had a bird and i potty-trained her, i never ever kept her in a cage - but because she used to play all over the house and yard i used to have her wings clipped at first (just a few feathers from 1 wing) but once she got used to her surroundings she used to fly and come back home to me every-day... birds are exceptionally intelligent creatures and once you win they love and trust they'll almost never leave you, actually my bird, who could fly and run outside whenever she wanted to used to prefer clinging to me, and travelling, eating, sleeping and being all the time with me! i know what sister reeha means when she says the saddest part of having a pet is losing it, coz when my bird (who was more like my baby than pet) died i was DEVASTATED... i think i'll never ever forget her and stop missing her even if a live to a million years.

I agree with you. I don't understand how people can cage birds, and fishes, and actually enjoy it. It sounds very depressing. I would never get a bird and cage it just so I could her it sing or talk. may Allah help these poor helpless beings.
