Default How would you answer this?

i came across some sisters having a discussion about wearing nailpolish

one sister said that we are allowed to wipe over waterproof socks if our feet are clean so using the same logic if we wear nailpolish whilst our nails are clean the nailpolish over it causes a waterproof barrier therefore our wudu would be valid if we washed over the nailpolish

the other sisters ofcourse were very impressed by her logic

From the Turkish Hanafi book on Fiqh
Endless Bliss - Book 4 - pg 23
Edit: Also I would add this is what Sunnipath has to say on the book:
http://spa.qibla.com/issue_view.asp?HD=1&ID=149&CATE=91
(not favourable)

Please Note this is referring to Ghusl. I was unable to find specific mention of nail polish in wudhu section.

It is not fard to wash under the dirt caused by fleas and flies, under henna, under the skin's
natural dirt or under any fluid oil or mud. It is necessary to wash under the waterproof things
stuck to the skin such as dough, wax, gum, solid oil, fish scale, a chewed piece of bread [and
fingernail polish]. If water does not soak through the food remains in the teeth or cavities, or if
the parts under them are not washed, a ghusl will not be acceptable. If a ring is tight it is
necessary to take it off or to shift it. So is the case with earrings. If there are no rings in the ring
holes, and if the holes are open, when washing the ears, it will be enough to moisten the holes. If
they do not get wet you must wet them with your fingers. In doing all these it will be enough to
believe strongly that they have become wet.

Wiping over the khuffain/leather socks/waterproof socks is proven from sunnah. Wiping over anything else is not. You can't wipe over gloves. You can't wipe over a mask. You can't wipe over a showercap. If you wear long sleeved shirts, then why even bother washing your forearms? The logic employed is unsound.

First shake off the great impression you got from her.

Then tell her, it would be allowed if u used leather nail polish.

Great stuff Br. Abdul Wahhab,

Also, religion is not based on logic.

Hadrat Ali (r.a) reported that, if religion was based on logic, then wiping socks from underneath would have been more logical than wiping it on top. But I saw that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) wiped it on top. (Abu Dawood) [NB: This is probably not the exact wording of the hadith]

As far as I know, the reasoning is invalid because a qat`i source is required to modify the ruling of another qat`i source.

There are conditions for making masah over khuffayn: one of those is that they have to reach the ankles and be free from holes bigger than the three smalles toes.

So, you can't make masah just over the nails in absence of a medical reason (masah over bandages and similar is permissible in case of need).

your not allowed to wear it while making ghusl or wudu as it covers your nails... and doesnt allow your nails to be cleaned... socks are different, as your feet are being covered by them... but hands arent covered..

you can wear it, when your on menses when you dont have to make wudu or you can wear it daily, but youd need to remove it before making wudu or ghusl

the reason its allowed to do masah on socks is because it is from nas katii, whichmeans from ahadith narrated in great number, by many sahabah. hadrat ali says reagarding masah aal khufain that if doin amal on deen was through akal intellect then we wudnt do masah on the top but at bottom....
Also there is a period for it, 1 day and night for someone at home, and 3 days and nihts for traveller, so what you said isnt even proper kiyaas!!!
If a person was to die with it on their nails, it wouldnt even be jaiz for those bathing her to remove it...stick to mendhi, sunnah, and no harmin it.

I have always been told that nail polish should not be worn at all. This is because if a woman dies whilst she has nail polish applied, then after a couple of minutes this polish would become hard and it would be too difficult to remove. So in such circumstances this female will be given a bath but will not be paak as the water will not reach her nails, hence she will meet Allah in a na-paak state. Audhubillah.
