Default Is Zabiha Painless?
Asalamu alaikum,

I have always thought that the Zabiha method of slaughtering animals was the most painless. However, while searching about Zabiha online, I came across two conflicting articles. One says that Zabiha is painless, the other one says that the animals feel pain:

1) http://www.scribd.com/doc/18968848/C...nation#archive

2) http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17972-animals-feel-the-pain-of-religious-slaughter.html

I'm quite confused about this topic. Can someone clarify this for me?

JazakAllah Khairan

even a SHaheed feels a small amount of pain (that of a bee sting) when they pass, so it can be expected that a zabiha'd animal will feel pain

i think of it like this: the act of cutting blood vessels isn't necessarily painful. When people cut their wrists to commit suicide they aren't writhing around in pain. Similarly, the animal being slaughtered doesn't writhe around in pain either other than the initial shock of having it's throat cut. Watch videos (if you can stomach them! scuse the pun) of animals in Zabiha and they'll just put up a struggle (as you would expect) and nothing more. they lose consciousness and drift away to the point where the soul leaves the body.

now, the actual process of the soul leaving the body is a different thing altogether and that hurts everyone regardless of the process of dying.

so two different things to consider here. my two cents worth

This is of course a good topic that needs careful thought. One thing that I remembered when I clicked that link, I thought i'd share. EVERY single thing Muslims do, someone finds a way to criticise. We believe in One God, people find ways to say there is none, or three, or we're all Gods. We say Muhammed sws is a messenger, people find ways to say he is not. We say riba is haram, people tell us why it is halal. We say prostitution is haram, people find ways to tell us its halal. We say gambling is haram, people say its 'just a bit of fun', or it 'brings jobs'. This applies to every single precept of Islam.
I guess what i'm saying is, when we google information, there will ALWAYS be articles contradicting the Islamic perspective. They do nothing but try to seed doubt in our hearts. If one thing doesn't affect us, Shaytan tries to find another way to affect us. I face this problem myself. I don't want to make too long a post out of it, but you can fill in what i'm trying to say Inshallah.

Salaam's.

I believe there was a study done in Germany some years ago, Animals that where stunned suffered greater pain, and Kosher and Halal were relatively painless. The Animal quickly loses conciousness upon zabiha. Although the limbs due to reflex reactions keep moving. Appoarently You get the same reflex reaction on Clinically dead Humans, whose Organs are being donated.

Whilst the Stunned Animal was in severe Pain due to the Paralysis of its limbs.

Yes, the first article is based on this study. However, the second article is supposedly based on a new experiment that shows that the Zabiha method does cause pain. I don't really know why there are two very contradictory articles on the same topic.

Yes, this is very true.
