Default Clothes in prayers
I have seen many people praying with their jeans/pents folded to keep their ankles free.
My question is: should a person fold the jeans/ pents inside or outside??
Since I was told that it should be folded inside.

Also is prayer valid if a person folds/rolls his sleeves up??

They should be folded inside and outside prayer: it's impermissible to have trousers/izar/qamis over one's ankles.

The Salah is valid but that act of having the sleeves folded/rolled up is makruh. Still it won't affect the validity of the prayer.

And Allah knows best.

JazakAllah umar_italy.

But I'm still confused about the folding of jeans/ pents. Do you mean we should fold the jeans/pents up towards the outside i.e like this

or the other way i.e inwards/ inside. I could not find a picture of jeans/pents folded inside but its the opposite of the above picture.

Hazrat,

He means that whether you are in NAMAZ or not, you should fold it because it is a big sin to have it below Ankles. (takhnay)

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said: "The part of an izar which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire." (Bukhari)

Izar means lungi. It can mean anything today, pant, shalwar etc.

Brother that part is already clear to me. What I am asking is that should the cloth of jeans/ pents be folded towards inside or towards outside, whether a person prays or not. The picture shows the cloth of jeans folded towards the outside.

Whatever way its folded, it SHOULD BE FOLDED

Whatever is easy. I think it would be difficult to fold towards inside.

As far as I understand it should be above the ankles, but NOT folded. Rather one should buy trousers that are already the correct length or have them shortened.

With a little practice shortening trousers is actually fairly easy - with a sewing machine at least.

Well, not everyone can afford a tailor (outside of Pakistan that is) nor does everyone know how to sew (which we should) so we buy our trousers from department stores and fold up the pants. As far as I know, folding up of sleeves is makruh, whereas folding up for pants is not.

The easiest solution is to wear a shalwar. Even if they may be long, you can easily fold up at the waistline to bring them above the ankles instead of folding at the ankles.

Question:
Are we allowed to fold our pants up, by the ankle in salah, so that our ankles are uncovered. I have heard thats its Makrooh therimi to pray with your pants folded.

Answer:

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It is disliked to pray with one's trousers "rolled up," but not if one's trousers are neatly and properly folded. The Prophetic command not to fold up one's clothing--whether sleeves or trouser legs, as the scholars explain--applies to any rolling up that is either untidy and unbecoming, or that is done in a manner that could distract one during prayer.

And Allah alone gives success.

As-salamu ´alaykum,

About folding being makruh:
It has been said that folding is makruh if it is done specifically for salah because of the ahadith forbidding folding clothes in salah. However if ones clothes are always folded, ulama tend to say that it is not makruh, because this is then the default of your clothes.

Yes, folding towards the inside is difficult and takes time.
Thank you for your reply.

It seems majority people are of the view that jeans/pents can be folded during prayer irrespective of being folded inside or outside. JazakAllah everyone.

I have another query regarding clothes, can a person wear T-shirts for prayer?? Although it is best to wear shalwar kameez for prayers but thats just not possible all the time for instance offering prayers at work, university, in uniform etc etc.

Also if my clothes i.e Shirts usually, have small logo/ symbol/ picture/ writing that is visible on the side or on the pocket of shirt, can I offer my prayer in it??

If your t-shirt will keep covering all your 'awrah (without exposing your back or even worse) even during ruku' and sajdah, your Salah will still be valid; but obviously another "style" would be preferred.

It will depend on the picture itself and its dimension.
Any picture/image of living creatures would be at least problematical (it will then depend on its size).

So it means a person can wear t-shirts because they usually are long enough and keep back etc well hidden.
Brother, what do you men by another style would be preferred??

What if the size is really small like on the pocket of shirt usually where the makers name is written. It would be smaller than say a persons small finger roughly half or atleast 3/4 of it?

It means that for example thobe or shalwar qameez "style" will be preferred over t-shirt and jeans style.

So if the picture, logo etc is huge then the prayer is invalid??

The problem is only with pictures/images of living creatures; if you have a huge "ARMANI" logo on your shirt it won't affect your prayer in any way, the same for any other thing written on your clothes (unless they have a blasphemous meaning, obviously!)..

Technically, but it's Makruh (Offensive/Disliked) assuming the T-shirt is a normal t-shirt and doesn't cover the elbows.
Some MAKROOH ACTS in NAMAAZ are:
1. Saying NAMAAZ BARE-HEADED due to LAZINESS or CARELESSNESS and to EXPOSE the
ARMS ABOVE the ELBOWS. -Taleemul Haqq p. 77
