What is the appropriate intention of taraweeh??
Also does a person have to make intention every time for the tarweeh prayer? I have long heard that it is not necessary to make it every time.

There is no specific way to make intention for Taraweeh, but you may say or intend to pray behind the imam in units of two rakats until twenty rakats Taraweeh facing the qibla.

Its just that I have heard that if your behind an imam you do not to make niyat for every taraweeh. So is this true?

You make niyat of 20 Rakat Sunnat Taraweeh whether behind Imam or not. If behind Imam then you also make niyat of following the Imam.

This niyat is already there anways. When you go to the masjid to read Taraweeh, you are going because of the Niyat. So you've already made Niyat.

If you do want to make niyat after every 2 rakats, it would be good from the Ikhlaas point of view. You can say ya Allah I make niyat to read 2 rakat taraweeh ONLY FOR YOU!
