question for everyone and not just for the brother i quoted above....

why do we follow south africa if we cannot see the moon in UK due to adverse weather, when we keep emphasising that we should sight the moon locally and if it is not sighted then complete a full month and then start the new month the next day? why do we follow south africa?

Because we as Hanafis don't have any problems with global sighting and in South Africa (due to its geographical position) it can be seen better.

SALAMS BROTHER,

from my understanding wifaqul ulama do emphasize on a local sighting and only when there is no sighting locally do they take into consideration other reliable sightings from other countries which can be verified.
please see the wifaqul ulama site where they explain their criteria for moonsighting.
please remember me and the whole ummah in your duas.

http://www.hilalcommittee.com/
There have been confirmed sightings of the new crescent in the parameters of the Hilal Committee, namely across Guyana and Trinidad, on the eve of Sunday July 31st, 2011 (29th Shabaan 1432), therefore Ramadan will start Monday 1st of August, 2011.

Assalam Wa Aalaikum,

Can someone please confirm if ramadan is on august 1 in USA? I see on internet that Fiqh Council of America has confirmed, but they do not seem to rely on actual sighting of moon.

This is my first ramadan here in US, and i'm confused as to what to do?
So can anyone please confirm what is the standard source to look, if I want to know about the starting date of Ramadan in US?

Jazak Allah,
Saad Qureshi

We have and accept "global sighting" in the Hanafi Madhhab, so as soon as the moon is spotted anywhere in the world by reliable people/witnesses, we can take this as proof for the beginning of Ramadan worldwide, even in the US.

Wa Allahu a'lam.

According to Chicago Hilal Committee, Ramadhan moon is sighted in Trinidad. Therefore, the first of Ramadhan will be on August 1, 2011

Re: New Zealand, it is a tricky situation, a small group of 4 who went out sighting a day early claims to have seen it, although it is scientifically impossible. The majority of the country have followed the official ruling with various people including myself rejecting the claim and considering Tuesday 1st Ramadan.

I don’t know what Shaykh Zulfiqar (HA) has written and how old it is but you don’t need NASA and Senior Military officials to accurately predict the birth of new moon and neither do you need 6000 variables and constants.

[/U].

ws:
Brother Please don't jump to any conclusion. The purpose of visit to the said places was only to further prove to the Saudi Govt. that their method of prediction the Moon on the basis of the so called scientific datas in completely wrong.

Read " BARKAT-E-RAMZAAN" translation of Bayaans of Hazrat Maulana Peer Zulfiqar Sahab by Mufti Inam Ul Haq

The first chapter of the book deals extensively on the Moon Sightings which includes

1) What is the Astronomical New Moon? ( Which means NO MOON can be sighted on this day
2) What is the Crescent Moon? ( = the Hilaal Moon that is the second day of the New Moon )
3) How the Maulana Zulfiqar Sahab met the Senior Officials of the Saudi Government and they accepted that their tradition of declaring the start and end of the Ramzaan on the Friday following the 15th Shabaan is COMPLETLY ABSURB !!!!
4) How the Haz, Maulana Zulfiqaar sb. met the Space Officials- USA and Senior Navy officials of US Marines who accepted that their method of predicting the MOON contains a whooping 6000 'Variables'and 'Constants'!!!
In short it and an complete In and out book regarding Moon sighting.

Jazalkalla0
In the above Book Hazrat Maulana Peer Zulfiqar Sahab has quoted from a book known as 'AJAYABUL MAKHLUKAAT' wherein it is mentioned the Imam Jaafer Sadik (R.A.) used to say the fith day of every Ramzaan will be the first day of the forthcomming Ramzaan ( ex.if the 5th day of the Ramzaan falls on Saturday then that means the next Ramzaan will start from Saturday). Imam Jaffer says that he has tested this for the last 50 years.
Hazrat Maulana Zulfiqar sahab adds that he himself has tested this since years .
