The trick is to use your himmah when you can do so voluntarily.

The servant first take the courage and then see how Allah swt helps him.

Agar himmat kamzour ho to ahlullah ki sohbat ikhtiyaar karey, aur agar ahlullah ki sohbat nahin mili to kam se kam rouz ana ahlullah key tazkirey parey, ahlullah key malfuzaat parey. ye ahlullah ki sohbat ka badla hai.

If the servant feels he is lacking in courage then he should sit in the company of the pious people of Allah swt, and if he does not even have this available to him then at the least he should daily read about the lives of the pious people of Allah swt or read the discourses of the pious people of Allah swt and insha'Allah he will acquire the needed courage to implement deen.

but at the end of the day Allah SWT decides who has more himmah and who doesnt. thats why He created and chose the sahabah for rasulullah SAW.....He created them to have more himmah......so in the end.....it all depends on whether or not Allah SWT has given you tawfiq to have the necessary himmah to overcome sin....correct?

So it would be fruitless to say I'm leaving sin due to my own will power as OP indicated.

Note: I want to be clear that my objection above is not with Hazrat Thanwi's statement RA. Hazrat Thanwi simply said that one's himmah is necessary to leave sin. There is nothing in that statement that indicates a human being is in full control of his willpower and can increase or decrease it by will.

Whichever heart accepts them, and absorbs them, gets a black spot placed on it, and
whichever heart rejects them, gets a white, clear spot on it.

a heart which is white, smooth, and clear like a polished stone which will not be harmed by further trials or tests for as long as the heavens and the earth last, and

The first statement is wrong. It is necessary but not sufficient. So dear brother put all the courage at your disposal to avoid sins. Then make dua-Ya Allah this was within my capacity and so I have done this effort to give up this sin and now I am supplicating to you to accept it and purify me from this ignominy-purify me by your Mercy.

make dua to Allah (SWT) sincerely before you do something. then do it. it will be done in sha Allah. if its not done, keep trying. the best way to avoid sins is to
a) make dua to Allah (SWT) to help you
b) remember he is Al - Samee, Al - Baseer. He Hears all, He Sees All. keep reminding yourself. soon you will feel you are under a spotlight.
c) repent immediately when you sin.

people often mix up the order. they dont do anything themselves and hope Allah (SWT) will will change their condition. Not that He can't. But there is no compulsion from Allah (SWT) as stated many times in the Qur'an. once you try and change yourself (make the effort) and hope in Allah (SWT), then see how easy things become.
