Wa'Laikum Assalaam
There are many different types of meditation, with different techniques and different resting positions from cultures all over the world, but I will tell you about eastern (oriental) meditation which I am familiar with. Meditation is a very useful tool, if you google it "How to Meditate" you will get millions of hits, but to sum it up for you here is a few tips: First, you need to the ideal environment. It has to be as silent as possible, and have lighting according to your taste; some people prefer dark rooms, but most swear by sunlight filtered through blinds or a white curtains. Second, practice controlling your breathing. IN through your nose, and OUT through your mouth slowly, this is also a great way to calm yourself down when you are frustrated. While your controlling your breathing, it is imperative that you not move a muscle. You have to remain absolutely still, relax your muscles starting from the tips of your toes, up your legs and all the way up to the top of your head. And that is basically it to be honest, you have to train yourself to control your breathing, and to keep 100% of your focus on your breathing during a session of meditation. Last tip I have is that the best place to practice is as your laying in bed before sleep. Just lay there in the position of sleep according to the Sunnah, keep your breathing under control and ignore any urge to move even a single muscle. Asalaamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatullah EDIT|: Yoga is a spiritual practice of Hindus. There is a saying that goes something like this "There is no Yoga without Hinduism, and there is no Hinduism without Yoga". Yoga is an integral part of their religion and so you may want to speak with a Sheikh about it's permissibility. Also I don't even know how you could learn yoga in a Halal environment (unless it were at home) due to the kind of dress that Yoga calls for, and public classes at gyms or athletic centres are obviously open to women of all different sexual orientations. You can't go wrong when you ask a Sheikh. |

But when I approached the Trainers they told me about "Surya Namaskara" or Prayer to Sun god for health. They also told me to learn "Gayathri Mantra" which they say is essential for spiritual glorification. I fear these to be acts of shirk as they look like namaz of some kind. As per the details of yoga supplied by you, it is not only haram, but it is feared that you would land yourself in shirk (associating partner with Allah). On a lighter note, I will tell you how to mediate, mikail.
Isolate yourself in a dark room. Put some 'itr on your clothes. Burn some incense so that clouds of it swirl around your head. Then close your eyes and take a deep breath. Let your breath out slowly while chanting, "Bhaad.........Mein........Jao..." It will help greatly, I am sure. Wa salam. |

Go and do some Early Morning Zikr and Youll Be fine DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE YOUR OWN MAMALAAT - DO NOT DEVELOP YOUR OWN BREATHING TECHNIQUE These techniques are prescribed by Sheikhs who know what they are doing - I have seen many brothers who have put into a permanent state of jazb because they decided to make their own mamalaat and incorporated tassawur into it while also using some kind of breathing technique. If you do not have a Sheikh, or your sheikh is not prescribing these types of programs for you - then follow the advice of Mikail - regular dhikr - you dont need anything fancy. |

so yoga is halal, yes? i read the fatwaz and everything is A-OK yes? Does performing yoga is against Islam ?. If is it so then can u tell me more about yoga.. Asalam Alaikum Don't listen to folks giving fatwas. Telling you that it is haram without even knowing what it is. There's nothing wrong with meditation. Just gain. 1st method 1. Lie down on bed. Be straight. Your head should point north. Reason is that your mind can be in tune with the cosmic waves flowing from North to South. 2. Relax and feel the muscles loosening. From toes to head. 3. Repeat the Muscle loosening for 3-7 times. 4. Then take deep breaths. Inhale from nose and exhale from half open mouth. The slower the inhale/ exhale is, the better it is. Do it for 3-7 times. 5. Now start feeling if a cosmic wave is getting into your body through the toes of your left foot. 6. Allow this wave to come up. [feel that this wave is like a small voltage current] 7. Move this wave with every breath you take and bring it slowly to the head and circulate it and let it move to the left side and slowly let it go through the left foot thumb. 8. Increase the intensity of wave or current, with more deep breaths and allow it to circulate again. 9. Now, lay still and feel that your soul is leaving body. Feel your self light. Weightless, imagine that you are lifting up. 10. With practice, one day you will get out of your body. Then explore by going wherever you want. 11. three golden rules. 1. NO PRIVACY INVASION, not even within your own house 2. NO INTERFERRENCE whatsoever in people's affairs. 3. NO BOASTING of any kind 12. When you want to come back inside your body, do it as slow as possible, in the exact manner and posture that your body is in. Tell people not to disturb you or shout around you or to wake you up. if you enter it with jerk then you may have to experience headaches. The remedy: just sleep again. 2nd method This method is not for leaving your body but for increasing the concentration and spiritual growth. Point 1-8 are the same. 9. Now imagine that a wave of light is entering your body. Its color is not important. You should feel its warmth through the parts where it is moving and illuminating the body. 10. Stop it in your heart and let it illuminate and give warmth to the heart. Then Move it to write Muhammad or Allah in your heart. Do as many as variations that you want to do. E.g. adding colors, illumination etc. just like a graphic work on a computer screen. 11. Take your time, and then let it move to the center of the head. Repeat the same procedure as you did in the heart. 12. Let it move to the left and slowly let it go through the toes of your right foot. Asalam Alaikum |

salaams - several steps of spiritual exercises ( including various types of zikr in special formats ) when a mureed (seeker) has got enough spiritual purification, then he is allowed to do meditation. I think , before meditation , the shaykh checks if the inward eye of the seeker is open or not. When with an open inward eye the seeker starts meditation , he sees divine light in a brilliant way which is very hard to descrbe in words. The veils are removed and you enter into an amazing secret world . In Naqshbandi sufi order , this meditation starts from the tenth lesson. Meditation is more close to budhism as it is most practiced in this religion. Well Muslims also claims that their prayer, called i guess Namaz or Salah is also a form of meditation. It may be as if you read the deeply about Salah or Namaz, whatever, the old practitioners were totally lost when they used to offer their prayer and that's called meditation i.e. to concentrate.
