Dowry should be abolished! It is the reason why baby girls are buried as soon as they are born or aborted after a scan, even Muslims do this in India astaghfirrulah. It is the reason why Husbands pour petrol on their wives because their fathers couldn't afford to pay back all the dowry! It is the reason why many fathers have incurred huge debts just to be able to marry of their daughters!! It is the reason for the spinsterhood of many women!! I can't believe its so prevalent amongst MUSLIMS even the so-called practicing ones are saying there's nothing wrong with it It is an ancient Indian/Hindu practice, even Hindus today are campaigning for it to be abolished, how come Muslims are still clinging on to this tradition then?

Well those who take dowry ask them, By Allah i didn't get any dowry nor did my father in law give any dowry, cash, not anything. He tried to give me a watch which i declined.

I just want to know here seriously, why do these fathers give dowry in the first place?

Lol, don't worry. I hate all idiotic hindu customs.

It's one thing if the bride's father is giving furniture, appliances, etc to his daughter for her to share with her husband, and another thing entirely if the bride's family is giving money directly to the groom. I see no problem even with the latter, it if it is given freely as a gift. But let's be honest, we all know the stories of the groom's family demanding dowry, and the bride's father having to undertake great financial burden (debt, even) to satisfy them. I wouldn't call this giving "dowry" freely and happily, when the family is under great pressure by the groom's side and society at large. And then there are the horrific cases of the bride being burned to death or otherwise harmed because the dowry was "insufficient". There's no denying that this institution is a great injustice. Again, try to make the distinction between gift and dowry. Dowry is a societal institution, and that makes it very hard for a person to avoid. So if this is the type of "dowry" we are talking about, my point stands that it makes no sense.

As for the tragic incident mentioned by the OP, then this needs to be a warning to all parents that they need to do their due diligence before marrying their children off into another family. It should not merely be that getting my kids married is a burden so let me get it overwith as soon as possible so I can be free of it. If the parents don't exercise the utmost effort, then they are to blame for every bit of pain and suffering of that young man or woman which results from a marriage to a bad family.
