Its nice to hear of your postive experience in starting the hijab. Its amazing how much change a 'piece of cloth' can bring about in a persons life. Theres so much depth and meaning to it.. its such a shame tho that its taken so negatively sometimes.

I'm not a sister, maybe some other sisters on this forum can address your worries more relavently...

But, can a non-Muslim wear a hijab? Of course, why not! There are many Christians still living in Palestine, and if you go to Palestine, you will see the Christian women there who cover their heads with scarves and wear modest clothes, just like the Muslims.

If you look at how people depict Mary the mother of Jesus, peace be upon him, she is usually wearing a scarf and a long dress, isn't she, I think? (Just like in the pictures you see of the Prophet Jesus, peace be upon him, and all the other Prophets - they are shown with beards, but the Muslims out of the Abrahamic faiths have kept this tradition up to this day, despit it being 'unfashionable'). And of course, there are still nuns today, who wear modest clothes, including a scarf.

So why not, it is a good thing, and it is closer to the 'natural' inbuilt disposition of mankind to dress in this way.

Because of the replies I have gotten to this question, I have felt encouraged and welcomed. I am also sure more than a few of those who have read this thread have also read my other post in Islam Q & A. Since I have gotten the response I that I have, I have felt the courage to at least try the hijab, and in fact, am doing so right now.

I feel so much better now that I am wearing it. I cannot explain fully how much more "complete" or even "appropriate" I feel.

Granted I have only just begun to try it out, and I know that I could not do so in front of my family quite yet (maybe that courage will come in time).

Anyway, I just wanted to give an update to those who may be reading this.

I don't think it would be offensive, but people will probably mistake you as a Muslim, which may lead to awkward situations. I know Orthodox Jewish women wear hats to cover their hair.

I have looked into the wearing of a head covering in other religions, and have found that I particularly like the reasons for doing so as specified in islam. The torah and the christian new testiment both state that a woman should wear a covering on their head for prayer (and christianity stating for submissive reasons). Therefore I see no reason as to why this cannot (or should not) still be practiced.

The reason I ask if a non-muslim could wear the hijab is because I wanted to make know if it would be seen as offensive or encouraged.

I know that there are other ways of covering one's head, but the reasons for wearing the hijab, and the hijab itself, are generally more appealing to me.

Please give your thoughts. Thank you.

Thank you, I have been considering embracing Islam since I was a little girl, it has just always had that pull to me. There are some things that I love dearly though that I am not sure where they fall in regard to Islam yet, so I am still searching.

As soon as I can afford to do so I plan to. I had wondered though if by wearing it when out of my home how it would appear to those that are Muslim in my area. I have noticed that they greet each other and I am not sure if by wearing the hijab and not knowing how to return the greeting if I would appear rude or insulting. Or if I did return the greeting and then it was later found out that I am not Muslim, how that would go over.

Just many curious things in my mind ^^;

In many Muslims countries the non Muslim women wear Hijab. Wearing Hijab is also in Christianity and Judaism as mentioned in the Bible.

Muslims use the words Assalam O Alaikum meaning peace be on you all. You can use these words and and Muslims can greet non Muslims with these words.

Congratulations for your efforts in choosing and wearing Hijab.

If you've been considering it since you were a child then the time is right. You will always get those doubts as these are what your inner desires and whisperings of satan will tell you.

Ask yourself this, if inside you feel drawn to islam then do you want to die in the state you're in now or as a muslim? This is because your time of death is unknown. How long will you put it off for?

Don't delay as you don't know if that opportunity will still be there tomorrow.

There is nothing wrong with returning the greeting - "wa alaykum salam". Arab Christians have done so for hundreds of years.
