Salam. The donkey is known to be amongst one of the animals who is very foolish and some ulema have said that due to bad characteristics of this animal, the donkey and mule have been forbidden to eat in order to save you from these ill characteristics that they possess. As the famous saying goes... "You are what you eat" waAllahu 'alam |

Salam. There r two type of Donkeys: Onager(one type of donkey) & Domesticated donkey. Onager is Halal but Domesticated donkey is Haram. Praise be to Allaah. It is permissible to eat the meat of onagers (“wild donkeys”) and it is haraam to eat the meat of domesticated donkeys. The first is permitted because of the report narrated by al-Bukhaari (5492) and Muslim (1196) from Abu Qataadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) who hunted an onager and brought a piece of it to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he ate some of it, and he said to his companions: “It is halaal, eat it.” With regard to domesticated donkeys, their meat was permitted at first, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) declared it to be haraam on the day of Khaybar. Al-Bukhaari (5520) narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: On the day of Khaybar, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade the meat of domesticated donkeys, but he granted us a concession allowing us to eat the meat of horses. Al-Bukhaari (5527) and Muslim (1936) narrated that Abu Tha’labah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade the meat of domesticated donkeys. Ibn Qudaamah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Most of the scholars believe that the meat of domesticated donkeys is haraam. Ahmad said: Fifteen of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) regarded it as makrooh (in the sense of being haraam). Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said: There is no difference of opinion among the Muslims scholars today concerning the fact that it is haraam. End quote from al-Mughni (9/324). And Allaah knows best. |

assalamu alaykum
Sahaba used to say Allah and His Prophet knows best for an reply to our prophet when prophet was(alive) among them. Now prophet is not among us, Is't permissible to say Allah and His Prophet knows best?. Specially now a days i have never seen any scholar uses that!. For the OP, should we say "Allah swt knows and prophet knew best" |

Now back to the original issue. Why is the meat of donkey haram? Because Allah prohibited eating the meat of donkey and his Prophet (s.a.w) conveyed this message to us. The "reason" for any command/prohibition in Islam is pure Divine and there can be no questioning about it. However, one might wonder the wisdom behind this and that prohibition or command.. There could be many that we know, or they maybe the cases where we have not given any knowledge of. For example, wisdom behind the prohibition of the pork could be that it is dirty, however, this is not the reason for prohibition. The reason is purely command of Allah. That's why even if someone disinfects and sanitizes the pork thoroughly, still it does NOT become halal. Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam Malik along the text of ahadith, they derive the proof from the verse Nahl-16/8: "And [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment. And He creates that which you do not know." Because these animals have been created for different purpose i.e ride and adornment, hence eating them is not allowed. So, similar prohibition of eating their flesh goes for horses and mules. |

His irritation (self created) is reflected in his replies to me on this thread Asking for proof is irritation? Yes it's irritation when one can't provide proof for his claim!. |

I have not found any authentic narration clearly stating we must refer to internet or even Bukhari / Muslim shareef collection deemed to be sole source of Islamic law. Very good talk. Brother is't biddah HASANA or biddah SAIYA? |
