Visiting the graveyard on Memorial Day?

Today at the end of the khutbah, the imam mentioned that they will be going to visit the graveyard after fajr on Memorial Day. He mentioned that since it is 'yawm al-dhakirah', we should remember those who have passed away and visit them. Now my question is, would this be considered a bid`ah? Also, since I don't visit the graves enough and this is a chance for me to act upon this sunnah, would it be wrong for me to join them if my intention is just to visit the graveyard since it's an opportune time? If the more knowledgeable brothers/sisters can address my question.
