Br. Neednoname I understand what you're saying, bro. I have used both the approaches during my confrontation with Non-Muslims at my workplace. But what I have observed is that often times our logics, no matter how good and convincing we think they are, fail to satiate their minds. I believe, best practise is to explain them the importance of emulating the Prophets in Islam first, which can then be followed by logical explanations. That is so because even if they fail to see or admit the logic behind the practice, they would never deny emotive aspect of it. |

It's a tough question. Especially because nowadays, wearing bottoms below the ankle is a non-issue, it has never been related to pride or anything of that sort. People don't even notice it. So, if you try to justify it along those lines (i.e. it shows that we are too proud), they'll probably ask further uncomfortable questions. As brother NeednoName said, it's best to focus on the Prophet (pbuh) and how we must follow him.

Brother zxh800 Brother Nomadic, Bolded part of your reply would defy all sort of questions or criticism from Non-Muslims in the very first place. Logical reasons and explanations given after that would hold stronger meaning than ever before. In case of Br. Alqurtabi, he can explain by saying that we regard prophet Muhammad (saw) as our highest role model and we aim to follow him in every aspect of his life. Wearing trouser above the ankle is one such action, which he not only exemplified but also instructed us to do the same. Now, one of the reason behind this COULD be that Clothes which hang below the ankles or drag on the floor are prone to gather numerous impurities from the road. And since we pray five times a day, we take great care in keeping ourselves free from any sort of impurities. Thus, we wear trousers above the ankles. You can end up by saying that even if we (Muslims) had failed to realise this reason, then His (saw) instruction was enough for us to act upon. |
