Leaving a tariqa

What is the adaab of leaving a particular tariqa? Do you just not go to their lectures or do you need to inform the sheikh?

Wa `alaykum as-salam:

I depends on the tariqa. Some turuq have different `adab than others. For example, in the Shadhili tariqa, one may leave the Tariqa upto 3 times.

My recommendation is to take it case by case, Tariqa by tariqa.

why is that? what happens after the third? is it a sin by any chance?

what about other tariqas?

Do you mean that this is a general understanding in the Shadhiliyah, or some specific Shuyukh?

The adab of leaving a tariqa is NOT TO INFROM THE SHAYKH. The reason being is that the Shaykh will be devasted if told what ever the reason maybe. I pray that this helps. Request for duas Faqeer Ahmed Naqshbandi.

This is what Shaykh Nuh Keller (may Allah preserve him) says in his little booklet about the Shadhili tariqa and thus, that's what I've heard about Shaykh Nuh Keller (may Allah preserve him)'s Shadhiliya-Darqawiya-Hashimiya tariqa which goes through Shaykh `Abd ar-Rahman Shaghouri (may Allah have mercy upon him) and Shaykh Muhammad al-Hashimi (may Allah have mercy upon him)

If one leaves the shadhili tariqa do they inform the Sheikh?

Yes they do, I know a Talib of Sheikh Nuh who left the tariqa to become a Qadri.

He sought permission first, because our area has no other shadhilis, and the only sufis in the area were Qadris, Sheikh Nuh gave his blessing to join up with the Qadris.

Later on the brother missed his sheikh very much and asked Sheikh Nuh personnaly to accept him back, which Sheikh Nuh graciously did.

...And in our tarriqa, permission should be sought for leaving or changing a Tarriqa, To leave or change without permission would be conssidered an insult to your Sheikh

Very right,one must ask his shaikh first & do every thing with his blessings.Hopefully this will put baraka in his decision.
