i was a research assistant after i graduated. (i am an engineer).
are these qualifications that you mentioned (gtp and pgce) required to teach?
with us its like get masters degree, become a lecturer, get PhD become an assistant prof.
is it different in your field?

interesting.

gtp. its a postgraduate training course, where you learn and work at the same time and get. paid. a pgce is a postgraduate certificate where you study for some weeks in university then you go to do 3 placements

I am too in my final yr of degree and hope to do P.G.C.E after
My only worry is that the placements requires having experience of teaching both genders and as an observer of niqaab I am not sure how and if I'll find accommodating placements...
But one will have to (try )cross that bridge when it comes...

muslimah, are you doing it from university or through home study? Primary or secondary? A few of the apas at our madrasah are also doing PGCE's with niqab. All three do primary so they remove it in the classroom and in and around school and put it on again before they walk out of the school gates. I think it is quite a lot to ask, if you are hoping to wear niqab in and around a state school. Don't end up like the other high profile cases.

The other option is to go to Muslim schools for a placement. One of my students is doing hers at a local Muslim school. There's probably some criteria of acceptable schools but it's something to look into. I pray it works out well for you.

Though I am not a teacher, but my suggestion for anyone who wants to become a teacher is to take some courses on human/child pshycology. It will help you immensly, inshaAllah. Additionally, like someone above mentioned that you should also try and do Phd if you have the means and if possible.

I'm doing degree though home study with the Open University and intend to apply for pgce through them.
My plan is to teach secondary but being in this predicament, i am not too sure of it.I certainly don't want to be categorised as a 'high profile case', Allah forbid.
I've had a cursory glance at the criteria and it says it has to be a mixture.Sadly, all the placements can't be faith school based.
I'm not applying yet so until then i'll have to study the ins and outs of the criteria and see if there's any loopholes.
Though,Aapa I hope you wouldn't mind if I come to you to ask questions on my behalf to your student, please?

Sister, how about this ?

http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into...?sc_lang=en-GB

You could perhaps work in an Islamic school for a couple of years inshaa Allah as an unqualified teacher and then take the above route to QTS inshaa Allah.

Wassalam!

Asalaamu Alaykum,

Those of you who are looking to get into teaching, don't just apply for a PGCE/GTP. There are sooooo many other routes and courses into teaching, which will also give you the NQT that is achieved by a PGCE/GTP. Also get as much teaching and classroom experience as possible, as well as being clued-up about the 'hot-gossip' in the world of teachers and students, especially that which is seen on national news.

This is all just a conspiracy to find out what every member on SF is doing in his/her life. Who's a doctor, who's a teacher, who's an engineer.... next they people are going to start thread's like how many (kanjoos) gujji's, how many 'big hearted' pakis and then they'll start asking how many millionaire's how many billionaire's and get every detail of everyone's lives! Just a warning
