I read the whole thread but didn't find any definitive answer to the question, "Is one allowed to keep a dog as a pet in the Maliki madhhab"?

If the answer is yes, can a Hanafi follow the Maliki position in this regard?

Even if it was the case it was permissible in the Maliki madhhab (I don't think so), you cannot pick and choose among madhahib out of convenience:

Sorry for reviving such an old thread, and if this has already been answered in another, but while searching for this answer I came upon this thread and didn't find the answer, but found it later here:

http://www.kalamullah.com/Books/The%...iki%20Fiqh.pdf

In ar-Risala by Abu Muhammad 'Abdullah ibn Abi Zayd:

Dogs are not to be kept in houses, whether in sedentary or in nomadic life, except dogs that can guard a farm or accompany flocks of sheep and goats in the desert and then bring them home in the evening. A man is also permitted to keep a dog to hunt for him if he lives by hunting. He can not keep a dog for mere sport.
