Pakistan blasphemy case: Muslim cleric arrested for allegedly framing Christian girl

Islamabad: Pakistani police have arrested a Muslim cleric on suspicion of planting evidence against a Christian girl accused of blasphemy, officers said on Sunday.

Rimsha has been in custody since she was arrested in a poor Islamabad suburb more than two weeks ago accused of burning papers containing verses from the Quran, in breach of Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws.

Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti, the imam of the mosque in Rimsha's poor area of Islamabad who first handed over evidence was arrested on Saturday after his assistants told a magistrate he had added pages from the Koran to the burned pages to strengthen the case against the girl.

"(Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti) was arrested after his deputy Maulvi Zubair and two others told a magistrate he added pages from the Quran to the burnt pages brought to him by a witness," police investigator Munir Hussain Jaffri told AFP.

Rimsha must wait until at least Monday to learn if she will be given bail, after a judge adjourned her case on Saturday amid doubts over legal paperwork.

A medical report last week said she has a mental age of less than 14.

ISLAMABAD: Police have arrested ‘imam masjid’ (prayer leader in the mosque), Khalid Jadoon, accused of tampering with the evidence against Rimsha Maseeh, who has been in detention since she was allegedly found holding in her hand burnt pages with holy verses printed on them, Geo News reported.

Earlier an eyewitness, in his statement before the magistrate on Saturday, said that Khalid Jadoon rigged the evidence against Rimsha Maseeh.

According to Hafiz Muhammad Zubair, the eyewitness, he was observing Itekaf in the mosque when he learnt about the incident of alleged burning of pages with Quranic verses printed on them.

He said that Ammad, the complainant in the case, handed over the ashes of pages with Quranic verses on them to the Imam of the mosque Khalid Jadoon, who also added more pages to it.

The eyewitness further said in his statement that he himself along with two more Itekaf observers protested against this brazen act of fudging the evidence against the poor girl. He said that he and other eyewitnesses had asked Khalid Jadoon to present the real evidences against Rimsha.

Meanwhile, the religious scholar Tahir Ashrafi has asked the Ulema as to what kind of punishment Imams like Khalid Jadoon deserved.

So the Imam himself burnt some pages to ensure that the girl was incarcerated? La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. In that case, the punishment should be on him (in the event that this is proven).

How an Imam of mosque can do such a thing just to aggravate the case of the poor girl. He should be punished severely. In his hatred for non-muslims, he has gone to extreme, burning the pages of Quran himself. He has undoubtedly earned severe chastisement from Allah (SWT) for himself. It's good that the witnesses came out with the truth.

It would be much better if a member from Rawalpindi/Islamabad updates us on the issue. The whole story is full of conflicting information and is being used by the media for defaming the scholars.

Astagfirullah, I ask forgiveness from Allah (SWT) for foolishly concurring the Buhtan made by a fraud star on an innocent Aalim. May Allah Keep the Imam Sahab in straight path. I read about the incident in different news now.
