Toothpaste

So recently, after reading about related topics like fluoride I decide to switch to a new brand of toothpaste that didn't have fluoride within.

Euthymol. This one doesn't have fluoride but the taste is strong and the nearest I can describe is a stronger, paste version of that pink stuff you swill out with at the dentist. This toothpaste is pink too...

Do you use a fluoride toothpaste or other?

What's wrong with fluoride?

WrigleyMike 03-13-2010 01:55 AM

I don't read the label so I have no idea but if I had to make a wager I'd bet they have it in it. My teeth, and yes they are not store bought, are in great shape and they've been in my mouth for a very long time so I must be doing something right.

There are shall we say, health concerns with fluoride and have been for a long time. Have a google around but don't get scared - I daresay you don't swallow toothpaste like a child might.

My intent was not so much to see how well we clean our teeth (I'm sure you keep yours well enough as you mention) but just to see if folks use fluoride based toothpaste or not. I daresay if you're not sure then it probably has it. The non fluoride stuff over here tends to be bottom shelf unless shopping in a specific health store.

Siph I guess I was just trying to tell you I'm not afraid of the miniscule amount of fluoride that is in toothpaste.

Henldyhl 03-13-2010 02:40 AM

I use fluoride toothpaste. But I did see on an episode of CSI I think that a person can be poisoned and die if they actually ate like 3 tubes of toothpaste. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...illy_nilly.gif

I'm pretty sure almost all toothpaste in the US contains fluoride.
You can OD on almost anything if you ingest too much of it.
I had a buddy a few years back that died from taco posioning.

illignocearia 03-13-2010 03:03 AM

I've started to go the non fluoride route. It's worth the extra money if you use the recommended amount.

I don't care how much they say it takes to be "toxic" swallowed or not it can't be good for you in any amount. I purchased a brand called Powersmile.

Mambattedge 03-13-2010 03:11 AM

Mine has fluoride in it, but I don't base my choice of toothpaste on fluoride. I just avoid certain brands.

Kids swallow toothpaste all of the time and it doesn't seem to hurt them. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/unsure.gif

My toothpaste is heavily flourided

Buincchotourbss 03-13-2010 03:25 AM

I wouldn't blame fluoride toothpaste for someone getting ill. It could be your whole range of cosmetic and toiletry products. Many of them have chemicals that aren't known whether they are safe or not, and aren't controlled by any means. Could be a whole mix of things I reckon.
I believe this to be true. All you have to do is with-hold from skin products and watch your skin glow after a couple of weeks. I think JanieDough posted a link about a woman who did this a while ago.

Lapsiks 03-13-2010 03:29 AM

Is it the flouride that is really bad for you as far as being toxic?

Most toothpastes contain trace amounts of chemicals that may be toxic when ingested; toothpaste is not intended to be swallowed. And I found this quite interesting...
Much of the toothpaste sold in the United States has 1000 to 1100 parts per million fluoride ion from one of these active ingredients, in the UK the fluoride content is often higher, a NaF of 0.32% w/w (1,450 ppm fluoride) is not uncommon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothpaste

wtf has that got to do with the risks of fluoride? if you're trying to say that fluoride isnt bad read the fuck up on it. Don't reckon... Until you read.

I don't see how an all natural toothpastye would be toxic in any way. i've never heard of a unnatural toothpaste without fluoride.

In the UK, there are fewer controls because I believe Toothpaste is not classed as a drug (I believe this is the case in the US?) but as a cosmetic. I will have to verify this though.
