Judging from the sheer size of this site and the countless testimonies that HCG does indeed work... I would say these guys are writing from a point of ignorance.

The Basics: This diet is an intense, 40-day, 500-calorie diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, and two meals of 3.5 ounces of protein alongside injections of HCG, a hormone found in pregnant women. The theory is that it will create some symptoms of pregnancy, such as nausea from morning sickness, to help control your desire to eat. While injections aren’t the only way HCG is distributed (there are tablets, etc.), it is believed that the injection method is the only one that is of any benefit.
Wonder where they came up with this rationale for using hCG.

I might have to return my copy of Pounds & Inches, since they seem to have one that's got the chapters for "do this and you too can have morning sickness", and "you bought drops sucker".

(eyeroll)

Why It Won't Work: “This is a completely unsafe method of losing weight. A 500-calorie diet is considered unsafe because it is so hypo-caloric that it could never meet your needs,” explains Bock. Plus, he goes on to say that there is no proof that the hormone itself will help you lose weight.
Not to sound catty, but the "Bock" they are quoting is John Bock, who is a nutritionist and dietitian. If this was rock, paper, scissors I am pretty sure that an endocrinologist crushes a dieti/tionist

From deeper into the article...
“Everyone is looking for the silver bullet [when it comes to dieting],” explains John Bock, nutritionist and dietitian at the Integrated Nutrition Therapy center in Southern New Jersey. “Thing is, there is no 'super food' that will save the day, ever,” promises Bock. “None of these diets are conducive to a long-term lifestyle change — something that you can stick too.”

The worse news: Many diets are detrimental to your health and mental stability. In our desperation to find said “silver bullet,” we've put ourselves in harm's way, especially when it comes to fad dieting. While some of these diets may help you lose weight in the short term, their methods can be unhealthy, and the pounds you shed usually don't stay off for long.
I love stuff like this, since all it does it knock down a support (under the heading of "trying to help people make the right decision"), but it offers nothing positive and no other direction to go.

I always love how they knock short term very low calorie diets.

Then endorse dangerous bypass surgeries that permanently restrict calories by eliminating stomach capacity and the ability to get nutrients by removing most the bowel.

HCg diet is the only diet that has worked for me. No other diet has ever helped me lose more than 10-20 pounds. None!!! I am down 55 pounds and a size 8 from a size 14/16. They can say whatever they want to but I am glad I read pounds and inches and believed in the protocol. These people just want to keep people fat!! I am glad I was smart enough to think for myself and consider the best option for me. Praise God and it worked. I am finally on a normal BMI. No diet has ever done that for me. I hope people ignore the hcg bashing and try it for themselves. I used injections.

After I quit smoking I gained 40 pounds. I went on Weight Watchers and began my yoyo dieting experience. Gainning and losing the same 40 pounds and adding more each time. My daughter in law was doing rounds of Hcg and looked fabulous after each round. I was afraid to try "the pregnancy hormone" she was using since I was in menopause. After her third round and her loss of 70 pounds I decided to put my fears aside and try, probably the only diet I hadn't already tried, Hcg. This was my round 2 and I have lost over 40 pounds and reshaped my body to the point of actually getting compliments again. I believe in Hcg and will defend it to the end. Lorie
