I tend to get leg cramps at night, and had finally gotten them taken care of before I started Atkins. I added both potassium and magnesium to my daily routine. Then I started Atkins, read the advice about adding more salt to my daily intake and was doing okay. Then I stopped adding in the extra salt for some reason. I started having what I call, restless legs. Felt like critters were walking around under the skin of my legs. Okay, I could sorta sleep through that. THEN major leg cramps...... OOWWWIIEEEEE... No sleep after they started at about 1AM. This had to stop. I did more research, read that I needed to add Calcium. Okay did that..... still had the cramps and bugs under my skin.
Finally I thought back to when this all started.... Oh, duh...... (hand slaps forehead here) when I started not adding in the salt. Pull out my well used copy of The New Atkins, looked up salt and there it was, on several pages but most important on page 96. All the truth about what burning of fat does to flush sodium from you body and how you need to replace it or.... Symptoms Fatigue, light-headedness when standing or exposed to heat, weakness, constipation (did not know this!), chronic headaches, AND leg cramps! DUH!!!!! We are told to add 1/2 tsp of salt throughout the day. Drink chicken broth or just add it to water. Or use soy sauce. Do this until 50 grams of carbs are part of your daily intake. I started adding 1/4 tsp to my first water of the day that take my vits with and 1/4 to the water I drink with dinner. Results? Well, I am sleeping through the night now.... well, as good as I can with a new kitten in the house. LOL ![]() |
