According to an article from Telegraph.co.uk:
Pregnant women should avoid 'diet' soft drinks that have been artificially sweetened, experts have said, after a study linked them with premature birth. A research was conducted in Denmark and was participated by 60,000 pregnant women. Researchers found out that those who drank soft drinks that were artificially sweetened, were more likely to give birth early. Here's another quote from the article: It was found that those who drank one serving per day of artificially sweetened fizzy drink were 38 per cent more likely to give birth before 37 weeks gestation and those who consumed four servings a day were 78 per cent more likely to have their baby prematurely. The effect was weaker for still artificially soft drinks and there was no link between premature birth and sugar-sweetened drinks, they said. Certainly, until more experimental work is done, this study suggests that pregnant women should steer clear of artificially sweetened drinks. Quite frankly, pregnant women should be focusing more on nutrient-rich drinks anyway, like milk and fruit juices. And don’t forget the water.” The researchers concluded that daily consumption of artificially sweetened soft drinks may be associated with an increased risk of preterm delivery. If you want to be sure, it's best to consult your doctor about it. |

There are other dangers to soda pop whether it is diet or not.
Soda pop contains phosphoric acid which converts to phosphorous in the body. Phosphorous dissolves calcium causing osteoporosis with prolonged consumption. It is best to avoid it all together but especially when pregnant. There are many benefits to eating natural foods. It is easier than trying to remember which processed foods cause a specific disease process or condition. |

I was so into soda drinks before but I stopped drinking because it was causing me acid reflux. I believe that it was also one of the factors that made me gain weight so I had to stop it. Soda drinks sometimes are so refreshing when you're thirsty and you get a different kind of refreshment. Now I have switched to fruit shakes which is healthier and much more tasty

Sometimes we still need to check the calorie count of our foods and drinks we eat/drink as a habit because some drinks say it's sugar free but the calorie content is still high. I think that diet drinks isn't a better option than the regular drinks because it has more preservatives and additives that are not good for the body at all, especially for pregnant women.

Yeah definitely! Pregnant women should avoid carbonated drinks and just go with fruit and vegetable juices. I always told my friend that it's good to drink lemon juice during pregnancy because that's what I heard from my mom. She followed my advice and she gave birth to a very clean (blemish and dark spot free) baby

Diet soda should probably be avoided by anyone trying to live a healthy lifestyle. It is full of chemeicals that do not naturally occur in foods and cannot be properly processed by the body. Also, the body's natural response to the intake of 'sweet' foods and drink is to release insulin as part of the digestion of sugar. Continual stimulation of this system without actually taking in sugar may contribute to adult onset diabetes, according to some researchers.

My sister was advised by her doctor not to drink soda because the extra sugar is not good for pregnancy. I also read that artificially sweetened drinks is not good for someone who's pregnant because it could lead to premature birth of the baby. I think pregnant women should eat healthy during pregnancy to give nutrition to the baby
