Top overrated bands/artists?

I personally think lady gaga is overrated.

And Metallica

wiweimeli 06-04-2010 08:04 AM

rolling stones, metallica, green day and any screamo/emo/hardcore/crunk what-the-****-evers and i know i'll get super bashed for this but the beatles

roundman 06-04-2010 12:31 PM

Greenday and I disregard your post's content.

Metallica are not overrated, they're very good. I think that The Black Album and Death Magnetic themselves are overrated, but as a band they're brilliant.

Without The Stones, none of the music you listen to would be around today. They broke barriers with songs like Sympathy for the Devil purely in lyrical content, and broke boundaries with their musical stylings.

The Beatles, it goes without saying, redefined music. I could make one album by The Beatles spread over their career that would have at least one song that every good artist from today remembers and respects for it's diversity.

Screamo etc. are legitimate genres.

Iron Maiden/Megadeth/over rock bands.

They're singers also sound ****ing retarded. I can stand metallica only cause I have their shirts.

metallica is mostly because i have a grudge about them because the napster thing, they r overrated but whatever

plenty of people thought of thought of thought provoking lyrics, the music industry would have survived without the stones, i dont care what anybody says, they're pretty horrible to me

they act like the beatles created rock n' roll and they absolutely didnt, it was only after they were influenced by american musicians and drugs that they became a pretty good band in my eyes

legitimate horrible genres, i like semi-coherent singing, even if it's spoken, screaming recklessly isn't talent its just a trip to a nyquil addiction

im not trying to be an ass, this is just my opinion

biannaruh 06-05-2010 04:04 PM

metallica,lady gaga,trivium, emo-core bands

ElenaEvgeevnaa 06-05-2010 04:22 PM

Lady Gaga, Metallica, Black Eyed Peas

teentodiefows 06-05-2010 05:05 PM

Usually those bands that try to stay underground, not becoming mainstream are the best..

Over-rated would be like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and some screamo-emo bands are what i'd consider over-rated

Heclailia 06-05-2010 06:42 PM

Drake, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Lil' Wayne, Young Money, Anyone Disney.

Not about thought provoking, it's about content. To create a song like Sympathy for the Devil was so outrageous. It was like when the Sex Pistols said 'C**t', only it affected the music industry in a good way.

The redefined music as we know it, without a doubt.

Are you counting things like the Black Dahlia Murder, The Bled, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Fantomas, and The Acacia Strain in this, or more My Chemical Romance's first album?

Me neither, this just interests me a lot, so I like to talk about it. xD

Generally something has to be well respected in order to be overrated.

As for those of you who said Metallica, I'd agree with you about their albums after AJFA, but their first four albums are fantastic. And for those of you who mentioned The Beatles, they were one of the first bands to write nearly all of their own songs, they popularized the idea that albums could be artistic statements and not just a collection of singles with filler in between, and I'm not aware of anyone who made albums as diverse and experimental as Revolver and Sgt. Peppers before they did. Not to mention their music, particularly in their later years, was fantastic.

As for a band I feel is overrated, and I know I'm going to get flamed for this, is Radiohead. I love Ok Computer and In Rainbows, but I have no idea what the big deal about The Bends is, or why Kid A topped just about everyone's album of the decade listed(granted, some of the songs were amazing, and the others may grow on me.) The rest of their albums I find neither here not there.

biannaruh 06-06-2010 04:01 PM

yes when i mentioned metallica i ment everything black album and newer. their early stuff are metal masterpieces. ride the lightning is one of my top five speed metal albums of all time

jyhugikuhih 06-06-2010 04:27 PM

RTL is my favorite metal album period.

MaugleeRobins 06-08-2010 02:23 PM

I think everything you hear on scuzz and kerrang is overrated. I also think bands like Opeth and Dream Theater and 99.99% of metalcore is overrated, plus bands like iron maiden and megadeath.

Fail, Megadeth is not over rated, you probably dont listen to enough of their stuff. Same for Iron Maiden, Too legit good.

I understand this is all opinion, but really. Rock at least requires the playing of instruments and practice. Rap, pop, all that stuff is garbage. Anyone can rhyme or complain to a synth'd beat and Look up seen or stupid on stage. At least Rock musicians have to actually write their own ****...

Remember, Dr. Seuss has been rhyming for years, and his work is in children books. Money + Fame =/= Talent, which I believe this thread is aiming to point out.

Of course this is all relative, in every case, there is an exception.

The Bends is their best album, but I don't rate them that much, TBH. xD

Skuzz are playing Cancer Bats, Every Time I Die, and Deftones. Anything you heard, radio or TV, before about 22:00 in England is generally crap, afterwards it's all very good. They play tracks from Machine Head's Supercharger album. That takes balls, TBH.

When you mentioned Rap, you lost your point. Rap is right down to the core, with people standing on street corners beating their hearts out to hone their skills. That's proper heart and soul. Jay Z >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>> Dragonforce, no matter how much practice they put into their contrived and overrated bulls**t.

i just dont like anything by the stones or even really respect their body of work, were americans we'll start singin' about satan sooner or later, i dont think they stepped over any new content barriers and even if they did they were just waiting to be stepped over, theirs alot more ballsy bands out there, especially in this day and age and i was never around for when they were so **** em, im not saying i hate old music btw just the rolling stones, if u wanna talk about controversy how about the mc5 saying "kick out the jams mother ****ers" in 1969? only one year later than sympathy for the devil, that took balls or how about your john lennon saying "we're more popular than jesus" in 1966? that just makes the stones look like wimps

i honestly believe that the beatles r much more hype than they r worth, im not saying i hate all their music, but they were a very basic band and their were many bands like them at the time, maybe not as versatile but just as good at their own thing, and for them to get half the credit for music in the 60s is kind of ridiculous

as far as that question goes, i really dont know, i hate all of it, ive heard alot of it, i like none of it enough to listen to and i supremely doubt ure gonna dig up something ide like

im glad people can take things civil

lungumnentibe 06-09-2010 10:15 AM

Honestly, I think all rappers are overrated and talentless. But then again, that just comes from my strict distaste for the genre.

Though, I will say I do think quite a few artists/bands outside of Rap/Hip-Hop are way overrated.
Lady Gaga
Anberlin
Slipknot
3 Days Grace (I mean, they're good and all but not the best band ever like some people like to claim)
Disturbed (Same as above)
Metallica
And finally (Which I'm prolly gonna get flamed for) The Beatles.
