R.E.M. calls it quits

To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band

they'll be back as the money dries up

TNOULbr2 09-21-2011 09:41 PM

Have they done much recently anyway? I remember they released something about the end of the world a few years back, and even then I was thinking 'wow, aren't they done yet?'.

Not in a nasty way, just a 'everyone has to retire sometime' sort of way.

They released that song when you were a year old. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/tongue2.gif

Shit.

Well, there was a huge gap between the release and when the radio acknowledged it's existence then!

That song has been playing on the radio for as long as I can remember. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/tongue2.gif Hell, it was even on Independence Day, which was released in 1996.

It was released as a single in November 1987, reaching #69 US Billboard Hot 100 and later reaching #39 in the UK singles chart on its re-release in December 1991. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It's_th...d_I_Feel_Fine)

All I know about REM is that one of them is bald and one of them is called Michael.

Ilaubuas 09-21-2011 11:37 PM

Michael Stipe is the bald one. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif

pipitous 09-21-2011 11:38 PM

Losing My Religion is also one of their songs... maybe that makes something else you know about them, to make up for it?

searkibia 09-22-2011 12:20 AM

...............its the end of REM as we know it...and I feel fine...

tipokot 09-22-2011 03:25 AM

I was never into R.E.M. - but had started listening recently to their album "Murmur"...need to finish that ASAP. Good luck to them all http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

That was the early 90s... "It's The end Of The World As We Know It" came out around the grunge era. I think Man in The Moon is newer than that or Losing My Religion.

Sorry I didn't know you had a crush on Michael Stipe.

GaxyGroordrep 09-22-2011 07:34 AM

PJ took care of it...but yeah, that song was earlier than the 90s. Anyway, I was in Athens the weekend that one of the members announced he was leaving the band (can't remember...the drummer, maybe???)...the whole town was in mourning.

Everybody should listen to automatic for the people. What an album.

Their output after Reveal has been mediocre though.
