![]() We're all into playing music so don't go all coy & deny that at least sometimes you get a bad audience reaction. Whether it's some pop song you got overly-enthusiastic about or maybe you just wanted to torment your audience as I am wont to do occasionally, tell here the track (s) you were told suck. Just last Saturday in my long sus wadio set I got told to 'PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ take off that horrible greek music' when I played the movie theme to zorba the greek. (I enjoy scratching over it with samples from the orb) your turn, confess! |

never really had club/interactive radio experience like that but i was given a 3-hour graduation party spot for my best friend and what was requested by high schoolers doesnt sit too well with his older family members. for example i was asked by a 4 year old to play "i kissed a girl" which got some what the feck looks from the adults and calmuchos "lollipop" mash with "hung up" was a hit... with my classmates

A bit of background - I play a club my friends and I set up in London called Crimes Against Pop - general idea is that anything from 1950 through to the current day we think is a good pop record, we'll play.
Comments/reactions that stick in my mind : Playing an electro pop set - lots of 80s classics and more contemporary stuff that had the same vibe. Scruffy Pete Doherty lookalike walks up and asks if I've got any Dylan. I humbly point out that I don't think that would work at 1 am in a pop club, he seems to take this in, then asks for some Neil Young :/ After a couple more totally unsuitable requests I give him a flyer for another club as he doesn't quite get the concept of what we're playing ... Getting told to play some old school hip hop as that's what the floor 'needs'. I point out I've just played some De La Soul, Dimples D, NWA. Chap, totally straight faced, tells me 'No, I mean proper old school, like Biggie and Nas' Ending the night with Soundhog's 500 Bad Mice and get a seriously drunk lass walk up to the booth and just shout in my face 'Make it stop, you're ruining the Proclaimers'. 6 months of nobody dancing at all to Phil'n'Dogs Dr Pressure despite me playing it every month. Single gets properly released and suddenly everyone thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread. Deciding to finish a set with Starship's We built this city on rock and roll (Hey, I like it) and watching the floor clear in under 30 seconds ![]() |

I'm a fan of 90s cheese dance... but you have to be careful what you play out
for example, Show Me Love by Robin S and Finally by Ce Ce Peniston are good bets... but get too underground (like Bizarre Inc) or too ridiculous (like Reel 2 Real) and the crowd doesn't get it. have had many floors clear since I started DJing a few years ago |
