Excerpt:
U.S. copyright law should be updated to better reflect the changing ways that mashup artists and other new content creators use existing works, some participants in the first [You cannot see the link as you're not logged in. Click here to login or here to register.] said.

Artists shouldn't face threats of huge fines and prison time for sampling from copyright works, said filmmaker Nina Paley, creator of the film "[You cannot see the link as you're not logged in. Paley, speaking at an event in Washington, D.C., called for a wholesale rewrite of copyright law to allow mashup artists to create new works without threat of lawsuits or prison time.

hell, even if they want to make it specific and say it can't be sold for any monetary gain, that'd be fine with 99% percent of us

It actually is 2010 now
& with years of bootleg history behind us
it would behoove some sensible small changes
to existing copyright law.

I wonder how much fear of authorities
discourages comment on sites like ours?
Naw,come to think of it,most blogs are slim in comments.

Most mashup / remix creators have no idea if their works are technically legal or not. There fact these has been little discussion of this issue on SuS shows how sensative the topic actually is.

What do you reckon about "fair use"? It seems to lead to a great deal of uncertainty in the mashup community and in that uncertainty many other creators dare not tread or post their creations.

How many mashups don't get created because people fear the legal risk that any use of their works must be "theft" or how many people drop out because it's all too hard

I remember a FANTASTIC Pet Shop Boys tribute album being released last year & it was pulled down right away when complaints arose.
A waste of much fine effort.

Well, in the last few days, we found our SuS album - Bhangra Bootay on some guys web site.

He had made a copy, renamed all the tracks with their web site details and they also seem to have removed the artwork from the album tracks. A blatant rip-off!!! Bastard!

Hey,that's pretty nervy to make those changes to our files.
All we get is the credit for the mixes & he took that away.

Yeah, very cheeky - SuS doesn't run for a profit so you are right credit for the toons is all most of the mashup artists get.

We’ve all heard about the record companies’ claims that illegal downloads are costing them and their artists millions billions of dollars.

Do you reckon mashups fall into this category? Or do you think a “X vs Y Mashups“, where the music of one song is used with the vocals of another does it in fact have the opposite effect - encourage listener to seek out other works from X and Y to further explore their music?
