Default Arctic Monkeys Win Mercury Prize!
Twenty thousand pounds, people. That's £20,000!

Arctic Monkeys have been awarded the Nationwide Mercury Prize 2006 for their debut album 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' despite stiff competition from the likes of Thom Yorke, Guillemots, Hot Chip and others.

The three original members were present at the ceremony to pick up the award and the accompanying cheque for twenty thousand pounds. Alex Turner must have seemed most surprised with the win as he quipped: "Somebody call 999, Richard Hawley's been robbed!", referring to the fellow Sheffield musician who was also nominated - and tipped by Alex Turner - for the prize.

Turner added:
"Thanks to everyone that's helped us. Normally it (the award) doesn't go to a band that's sold so many records, to put it bluntly, but we're pleased. They're good tunes, that's what we do and there aren't any tricks, people are trying to do too many tricks."

The full nominations for this year were as follows:
Arctic Monkeys - 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas'
Editors - 'The Back Room'
Guillemots - 'Through The Windowpane'
Richard Hawley - 'Coles Corner'
Hot Chip - 'The Warning'
Muse - 'Black Holes & Revelations'
Zoe Rahman - 'Melting Pot'
Lou Rhodes - 'Beloved One'
Scritti Politti - 'White Bread Black Beer'
Sway - 'This Is My Demo'
Thom Yorke - 'The Eraser'

Hell Yeah! I'm happy for the young lads. The only competion for me was Muse, but I'd have to say 'Whatever people say I am...' probably does dge in ahead.

£20, 000 to go along with it annol. Anyway, Your thoughts?

Not a fan of them, they have a couple catchy songs but imo they all sound very much the same. It'll be an interesting 2nd album. I was hoping for Muse or Guillemots.

the album is very good if you ask me

if you like or at least get them, its a good cd and worth the price. if you dont get them then stay away.

Im happy they won it cause they have to some extent backed up their hype, but that wont be justified til the next album IMO

I think their hype [which has died down, thankfully, some say] as been backed up fully. A superb first album, followed up by a gret EP, and a Quality single with great covers on it. Plus the amount of touring the lads haved done.

I can't wait for the next album, hopefully Alex will turn his wit and song writting ability to the world of celebrity in the same way he did youth life in Britain. Crack on lads, I say!
