Hi Marie,

That's interesting, because when I wrote that it was both my sister and myself who experienced the loud bangings in the house, yet no one else could hear them, these episodes all took place following the death of our mother as well. So our energies would probably have been pretty emotionally charged...I was 10 and my sister was 6 when we lost our mum, we were the youngest in the family. We also grew up in a pretty bad environment, esp. after our mum's passing...lots of verbal abuse, our dad drank a lot, and there was also sexual abuse that I experienced. As a child, I had the feeling that the bangings occured as a result of our mother's spirit being upset - both over leaving us when she hadn't wanted to go, and over the fact that we were suffering in her absence. Of course now I'm not sure if that was the case, but I do believe that both my sister's and my emotions played a heavy part in us experiencing the strange events.

I also believe I actually heard my mum's spirit walking around one night. I was sleeping in the downstairs bedroom - there was only one downstairs, so I was the only one asleep on that floor of the house - when a noise woke me. I used to always sleep with the blankets over my head, as I was afraid of the dark, so when I heard the noise I woke up, but didn't uncover my head...was just too afraid. The noise I thought I heard was my bedroom door slowly opening. I lay there for a moment and waited, wondering if I'd imagined it. Then I heard the distinct sound of footsteps walking across the hardwood floor towards my bed. By this time I was petrified, and my heart was pounding so loudly I felt certain whoever was in my room would hear it. The footsteps stopped right at the side of my bed, in front of a cedar chest that was in my room. It was my mum's cedar chest, and it was filled with blankets and linen...but at the bottom of the chest was a drawer, and as I lay there I thought I heard the drawer opening, and shuffling of papers. After that I heard nothing, and I must have lay there for at least an hour, too afraid to move a muscle...but nothing happened. And that's all I can recall, so at that point I must have finally fallen back to sleep despite my fear.

The next morning when I woke up that was the first thing I remembered, but of course I thought I must have been dreaming. Then I went to get out of bed. I looked down and was shocked to see that the drawer to the cedar chest was open, and the papers - letters from my oldest brother, who had enlisted in the U.S. army several months before - were scattered about. When I got up I asked my dad, my sister, and my younger brother if they had been in my room that night, and they all said no, and wondered why. When I told them what had happened, my dad and brother both said I had to be dreaming. My sister did believe me, which was a bit of a comfort. I do believe the presence in my room had been that of my mum, that she was somehow worried about David, my brother who was away in the army- this was during the time of the Vietnam war - and was somehow trying to connect with him.
You almost sound as if you could be describing my childhood! Except my mum was there.
I had another odd incident, this was all around the same time. My dad had passed away when I was 19 and I was around this time in my early thirties. I had taken up meditation to calm my nerves and one night while staying in my friends apartment while meditating in the livng room after they had gone to bed, I was very deep in a meditative state when clear as if he was right next to me, I heard my dad say right into my ear "Ria, get your mother's heart checked!" Well, needless to say, I jumped right up off the floor and turned on all the lights shaken.
The next day I called my mum and casually suggested she go in for a check up and the Dr. said there was a severe problem with her blood pressure and it was lucky we had caught it. I can't explain it, but I know my dads voice.
I'll have to take more time to add other incidents as I do have quite a few I would love to share.

Blessings, Marie

Thank you for taking the time to answer me. Your "optimism" sounds like mine lol
I'd be a little nervous saying come on in! hehe I've had some rather strange experiences in the past.
I wish I knew what it was. I too have different ideas of what it is.

Blessings, Marie
I agree with you on saying come in, I wouldn't, you never know what your welcoming in your home.

Fascinating experiences everyone. Thanks so much for sharing! Knocks are normally a wake up call for me...Marie, that's an amazing experience..great thing you were able to use it and help your mom with it...(I get a little shakey with things like that at times...)

Thank you Rosa. For the same reason I wouldn't use an Ouija board, I wouldn't just say "come on in" lol.

Default Knocking?
Hello !

I am stumped.

This has been happening for the last couple years. Most times I will be in a sound sleep and hear a loud knocking usually three very loud raps that will awaken me from a sound sleep, a couple times I was lying there drifting off and the same thing, but most of the time already asleep.

I used to get up, thinking someone was knocking on the door or a window or something and of course there was no one there, now I don't get up at all.

Does anyone know, is someone, or something trying to get my attention or is there another explanation?

Blessings, Marie

how strange. I've heard of knockings (three knocks) where you think someone isat the dooor as a forerunner to death... but if you've been hearing it for years it's obviously not that.
I have heard knocking when it has been a forerunner but also i've had experiences similar to yours. i'll be drifting off to sleep and i'll hear 3 knocks. of course being ever the optimis i think someone will die ;o) but they don't.
i dont know what it is. Maybe someone is trying to contact you. I'd never thught of it that way before.
maybe next time you shuld say 'come in' ;o)
you could be more succeptable to spirits in your sleep. maybe they are tryingto get your attention at your most succeptable time.

I too have heard knocking, but it was when my Grandmother died, and was apparently passing through my part of town, as I also heard her call my name.

That being said, I have heard that there can be a knocking, or buzzing (different sounds for different people) when you are leaving or returning to your body when falling asleep or just waking up.

Once when waking, I heard a conversation, none of which I can remember though. The voices had an east coast accent, and I know no one from there. Strange.

Just a thought, hope it helps.

I often get raps when I've been meditating, and also feel a presence in the room when it happens. I'ts like a loud crack inside the wall, of a gentle quiet tapping that's too consistant for a chance noise of furniture creaking etc.... At first I brushed it off, but it became more persistant at times to ignore, so I began to study it when it happenend.

I once went to a Buddhist meditation seminar and we had a week to learn from the leader...anyhow...meditating was fun except i didn't have time to so I told the spiritual leader about me not being able to meditate due to lack of time..so I get home..go to bed..next day, there's this knocking..something waking me up...anyhow..I woke upo looked around..no one was there..go to bed and later that evening the buddhist spiritual leader asks me how i was doing..i told him the same I didn't have time..and he says "but I did wake you up early"...it was weird..really strange..totally creeped me out..

I haven't had a similar expereince since..

Just wanted to share that I've experienced very loud knockings, sometimes bangings, at night. This first happened to me when I was younger; actually my sister and I both had it happen to us at separate times. It always occured in the same bedroom (we shared the bedroom for a few years, but it only happened when just one of us was in the room), and it was more than a knock. It was an incredibly loud, earsplitting bang that literally shook the side of the house, as if someone was outside and hitting it with a sledgehammer. The bedroom was on the second floor of the house, so there was no chance that anyone or anything was actually causing it. Our dad told us it must have been the house 'settling'...but I've heard normal creaks and groans of a house that settles, and this wasn't it. And it happened at various times of year, winter or summer. Interestingly, it always happened when I was awake, lying in bed and reading a book...and no one who was still awake downstairs ever heard a thing.

This same thing happened to me again a few years ago, in a house I now own. I was sitting in bed one night (again, reading), when suddenly there was a huge slam against one wall...and again, it reverberated much like a sledgehammer's strike. I immediately got up and went to my son's bedroom, which was next to mine...he was awake and was at his computer. When I asked him if he heard or felt the bang, he said no, he hadn't heard a thing.

A few nights later something even odder happened...I was sitting in bed, awake, when I heard scratching noises on the other side of my bedroom door, like an animal pawing to get in. My cat was lying at the end of my bed, so I knew it wasn't him...but I figured my dog must have wanted into the room, so I got up and opened the door. Nothing was there, but my son's bedroom door was open and he was once again sitting at his computer...just a few feet away from my door. So I went in and was about to ask him where the dog was when I saw her, asleep on the end of his bed. I asked my son if he heard the strange noises in the hall...he obviously would have since his door was only a few feet from mine, and it was open...but he shook his head and said no.

So this has me wondering if a) something had been trying to get my attention...some unseen entity; or b) if my emotions were somehow creating the noises, much the way poltergeists are said to be the creation of young teens who are going through emotional turmoil. My guess is that it is probably the former, as I did once sense a presence in my house when I was alone one day...I felt a cool rush of air as I was walking into my son's bedroom, and it felt distinctly like a person had brushed against me. Anyway, that's my theory...that it's possible the sounds that you were hearing, Marie, could have been someone attempting to get your attention.

Wondering... I know this is getting away from the knocking subject, but I would like to share with you some 'scratching' noises I have experienced as I have no ideawhy it happened and it was all very odd.
I was staying at my boyfriend's house for the first time (i do believe this house is haunted for other reasons but it's a long story lol) I was alone in the house and hadjust gotten out of the shower. I was sitting in the bedroom i was stying in and brushing my hair, everything was completly silent. I was sitting with the door closed as I had gotten dressed and even though no one was home it wasn'tmy house so it felt weird lol. ANYWAYS, it was silent and then I heard a scratching noise at the door, like an animal, maybe the size of a dog, scratching at the door. My first thought was that the dogs got upstairs (which was a thought of dread because they like to mark their territory!) I opened the door but there was nothing there. I went downstairs to the kitchen and both the dogs were locked in the kitchen with a child gate and it would have been impossible for them to get out.
I told my boyfriend about it and hemumbled something about maybe having rats but they would have to be HUGE rats to make a noise like that. Ihaven't heard it there since.

Very, very fascinating story! I can see what you mean.
It has occurred to me that it only started happening when my mum passed away a few years ago, so maybe?

Many years ago I did go through a very hard time with "something" or "someone" bothering me very much, sitting on the end of my bed, that sort of thing.
I'll have to write more when I get the chance
Blessings, Marie

this is a real quick in and out,.. sorry if i reat anything (not that what i have to say will help all that much) i just dont have much time to read the whole thread right now....

tho i did want to add.... that i have had this b4, i've woken up but dont know why (heavy sleeper) Yet there has been the one time i KNOW i heard the Knocking...i was drifting off,...and heard 3 knock/taps/thumps which got me out of drift mode,..then 5-10mins later i heard the same thing.... it's never happened again since,..and that was about 6 months ago....

At the time i tried to seek advice/comments from another forum (nearly like this one,...some topics) yet i was rudely told it was in my head or i was dreaming....

I soon left that site, i had been there for awhile, and offered alot,..but find that the members were not at one with anything....oh, maybe only their ego

I think there are so many things taking place in spirit world - which I believe is just a veil away from us in the physical - that we can pick up on many many things. The scratchings at the door (as you and I both experienced), or lights blowing constantly - or turning on or off by themselves, or hearing your name whispered...there can be all sorts of explanations, ranging from the scientific to the spiritual, or even combinations. I tend to think that our emotions factor into it heavily, as does being more aware of entities that could be around us. Interesting that you believe your boyfriend's house is haunted. If this is the case, perhaps you are a more 'sensitive' person to whatever or whoever could be occupying the house, and that could be why you experienced this, while your boyfriend seems oblivious to such events (either that, or he isn't willing to admit to himself that he's heard/seen/felt things; many people will absolutely deny the possibility). I'm curious to hear what caused you to believe the house is haunted - besides what you shared about the scratching sounds. This subject fascinates me...I love sharing stories...
