I posted this on another forum but got little response, so I'm trying it here to find out what you think about it.

What follows is a description of the first and only time I have had an astral sight experience of this particular kind. I was awake, and I could move, and could open my eyes, but whenever I closed my eyes the vision was back.

During the day, I was at the movies. Shortly after I sat down, I felt someone about to walk past, so I moved my legs to the side to let the person walk past. To my surprise there was noone there. The entire row was empty.

Around 3:30am that same night (Sept. 4, 2009), I woke up/became conscious. I could move and there was no sleep paralysis. The black behind my closed eyelids changed into detailed black/gray/brown. Very intricate and intense contrast. I looked and saw the row of seats in the movie theatre, and a man walked up toward me. He was black and had yellow (concentrical rings) eyes and was chanting in a foreign language. I opened my eyes and thought "how weird" closed my eyes and there he was again. I was able to open and close my eyes and the vision returned each time.

I then received a message by another black man and was in the form of what I think Robert Monroe called NVC (non verbal communication, not the generic meaning, but a weird blend of concepts and images). What the other man did was to look at me and show me his face as he faced to my right, that is, at first, I only saw the right side of his face. He then slowly rotated his head so that I saw the back of his head. He rotated further until I gained eye contact with him again and I saw the left side of his face.

The second man had white markings on his face. There was a finger-thick, white line that crossed his forehead right above the eye brows and dipped down a bit across the nose and near the sides of the face. There was also a line that crossed the face underneath the eyes that dipped up a bit across the nose and near the sides of the face. Almost like a set of drawn out glasses. Both of the men looked African. I later looked it up and the only images that I have been able to find on the Internet reminds me of images of shamans and sorcerers from Papau New Guinea. This came as a surprise, I have no cultural connections to that place. It was a sight that I least expected, it was completely outside of my frame of reference.

When the vision faded, I got up, and as I stood up a hypnopomic imagery, a dark blotch, moved across the floor. When I was back to "100% normal" I got a little spooked about what had just happened. I have seen way to many X-Files episodes to consider that anything would be positive about meeting a black man with weird colored eyes that is also in a chanting mood. It felt threatening, but more like a power display than an actual challenge. It was a ritual, I know that much, but I don't know what for. There was a full moon that night, but I do not personally contribute any significance to the phases of the moon.

The dreams that followed when I went back to sleep represented what I wanted to take with me of my life (what to keep, what to throw away) and a dream about how to kill or disable a crocodile through strangulation (could be a brain metaphor, disabling the primitive part of the brain).

Has anyone here heard of rituals being performed in response to people asking for help with OBEs?
Are there any possible explanations/interpretations for what I saw?

Yes, I have indeed received an initiatory experience of a different type than the one you describe, but it was also ritualized, and at the time it indicated changes to come. The imagery made sense to me years after I received it, and it seems you have more of a handle on what it may mean than I did at the time.
I suggest you continue doing whatever practice you are doing, and if it indeed was a RV to a Papuan shamanic ceremony, keep your eyes peeled for other similar experiences (although if it was an initiation you may not receive something like this again).
At first when I started to read your description it sounded like what I see when I remote view (not the content, the way you saw what you saw). When I'm "on" I can see stuff when I close my eyes and then open them and the deal is gone- and I also have experienced the 'disembodied presence' effect that you described- the first time during a fever, and another time while healthy but in light trance.
Don't have any useful advice, except see what happens next, and consider yourself welcomed into some sort of initiate experience.

Hi CFTraveler!

It is that impression of black and brown that started the experience (in the previous post) and in that vision, those colors reamined in the background throughout. I had another experience about three weeks later that involved connecting with a being that had those same colors. It started out as a dream but once I made the connection, it felt like everything started happening at once: I woke up in bed to vibrations, sounds, flashes of light, my second body arms were right up in the air, etc. There were a lot of discrepancies, I felt and did not feel, heard but did not hear a thing, all at the same time. Very confusing. I assume the conflict was due to the new way of perceiving, that I am not used to it yet. But, I suppose it could also be that I experienced duality where two components of me perceived what was going on differently. That experience ended with a mini-OBE using the roll-out method. I got out but snapped right back in again. It was a very energetic event, and I had solid goosebumps from head to toe for at least an hour afterwards. Amazing!

In the last OBE, last Thursday, I woke up and saw dropdown menues and one of the items/links was labeled: "roll-out method". I selected it and immediately rolled out of the body. It was a conscious exit, did the playing card experiment, and had a conscious reentry. The reentry was difficult though and it took some time before I got back together again and was able to sit up and write everything down. I got the color and number of the card correct but could not interpret the heart symbol correctly. What I saw was a red square instead of a red heart. Also, the card was not where I thought it would be (someone else picked the card, without looking at it, hid the card, and later retrieved it for me).

So, things are finally starting to happen!

I assume everyone perceive these things differently, like with everything else, but have you ever seen a high contrast shiny black/brown with tiny scratches or details in tan/white/beige colors right before an OBE or RV?

No, I usually will see very mottled shades (almost like an impressionist painting in drab colors in the tan range) of what's around me. Besides the vision screens, that is. But when I do get these (not the screens) I'm awake and aware. The screens or dual input happen in trance or upon awakening.

The vision was the first that I have had of that kind, that I remember. I have seen a lot of hypnopompic imagery, but that is imagery superimposed on the surroundings that I see with my eyes open just after I wake up. It took some time to get used to that. People are not supposed to "see" things that are not supposed to be there, so I got very uncomfortable when this first started happening. Fortunately, this is only happen rarely and only when I first wake up.

I have some problems with classifying experiences as this and that and it feels like I am continually contradicting myself when I try to describe them in absolutes. I keep remembering stuff that happened that I did not pay much attention to, then. For example, I woke up once and the TV in my bedroom was on with loud static. It was morning and bright in the room, unusually bright, to the point that everything was a bit fuzzy. I got a bit irritated that someone had turned on the TV, I got up and turned it off, and crashed back into bed. Later when I woke up I asked why someone had turned on the TV with static on such a loud volume. Noone had heard the TV and noone admitted to turning it on. Was that an OBE? Not a clue. Could have been.

If I were going to classify it, I'd say it was reentry with confabulation. In other words, the static sound was reentry astral noise, and your subconscious made up a dream to explain the noise in a way that made sense to it/you.
