I think this could be related to the "tetris effect." It's a bit as if our brain had "cache," like on a CPU, a zone where the most recent memories are stored for quicker access later on. This is a mental device we have to help us with repetitive actions. For instance, if you're playing tennis, you might want to warm up by playing a couple of practice balls so that your tennis-playing reflexes are fresh in your mind. After a few balls, the motions will be in your "cache" and you'll be ready to use them quicker and more appropriately than if you had not practiced beforehand.

This cache applies to everything we do, and hypnogogics seem to be very influenced by it. If you play tetris for 3 hours and then go to sleep, you'll start seeing falling blocks, playing tetris in your head. If you've been browsing the internet and typing for 3 hours, you'll see scrollbars and frames and text boxes... If you've been watching a movie, you might see things that happened in the movie.

Mantras, affirmations, relaxation and visualization exercises before sleep all influence the cache, which ultimately dictates what will happen in the trance state.

Now it's just a matter of using this to your advantage

I've had a book open at a certain page for me to read, very strange and shocking messages but also a voice telling me something. The spoken message it's very simple but usually cryptic with a hidden meaning but could have more than one interpretation. The last hypnogogic spoken message was telling me that this man I've been dreaming about it's in my love life and in other's lives and it said his name.I would never have remembered if my son wouldn't have tried to wake me up from my nap.

kiwi,

I don't think it is a case of a "visual cache". It is more like content with emotions attached to it. Doing the emotion-release, the content came back before it was gone. I was angry how that forum-discussion went, and anxious about that letter. That is reflected in what came back - as soon as I touch back on the emotions that hurt me in minor or major ways, thoughts keep flooding back.

The new thing really is that pictures are associated by it. That took me by surprise. I didn't have that before.

I get that visual thing every once in a while- the screen scrolling to give me the message. The message has been valid, but the form has been from the 'visual cache'. When this happens I know it's time to walk away from the computer for a while.
