Default .338 Lapua
Anyone got any experience firing this round?

http://www.snipercentral.com/338.htm

I was thinking of taking up target shooting, long range. I like this rifle, Savage has been making a good new for themselves I am hearing.

Anyone have a Savage rifle, or know anything about this round?

I have .338 Lapua built on a remington 700 action customized by Heart and a fluted 26" fluted barrel made by Hart.

I had that rifle made for Bighorn hunting in Lamoille Canyon, just south of Elko...

It's a nice enough place, it's starting to get a little bit too trendy in the same way Sun Valley, Idaho or Park City, Utah are.

Before it was kinda like Schurz, where the odd passerby up and went missing, never to be found again.

I think all the crazies and drunk Paiutes are being/have been pushed out of the area in favor of multimillion dollar ranches that serve no purpose.

My father leases a lot of BLM land in Nevada mostly for cattle (in between Wellington and Walker Lake) so we've never had any real problems getting a lease to hunt near the Ruby's..

When you say long range you must mean really LONG RANGE if you are considering a 338 magnum. Unless you plan on shooting for targets at 1000+ yards (with a dedicated spotter helping out) you don't need a Lapua for target practice. I fired about 10 rounds off an AMPTech DSR1 and it was fun and all, but rounds are about 3 dollars a piece for the cheap shit and almost $10 per round for hunting quality. You are better off getting a more traditional rifle for practice unless money is no object.

What is your price range and experience level with rifles currently?

No experience with that particular weapon or that round in particular, but I've owned several Savage rifles. The last one I purchased was a 25.06 . I'm well aware there are many higher end rifles, but I do like the Savage for its durability and field wear. You certainly don't need to worry about scratching some exotic or high $$$ finish, though I tend to be careful anyway.

For the buck, Savage makes a fine firearm, and definitely is up there in reliability and durability, imo.

As has been pointed out, depending on what sport you are attempting to get into, you may want to practice with something a little less expensive for ammo.

I pay a little over eight bucks a round for 300 Grain Subsonic hollow points.

Out of state bighorn tags aren't easy to come by - after losing an opportunity to get a really nice trophy ram because the bitch was just a tad bit too far away I couldn't reasonably chance taking the shot, because of that instance, I invested some time and money so that ordeal wouldn't ever happen again.

Now-a-days it's not an issue, minus having to account for drift and velocity factors - I got a good deal on a Sightron spotter scope/Long Range scope combo as well...

It ain't a cheap round to shoot. Firing five rounds into a paper target will cost around 45 to 60 bucks.... you'd be better off with a 300 Winchester Mag, still not cheap, but a lot cheaper than the 338. Also, the guns that work that round ain't cheap either. My L96 cost over 4 grand without the scope. Add another grand, or two for scope, and that round becomes a big ticket item adding to the cost...

Thanks guys, I like this weapon but after looking into the things talked about here, I dont think its going to be a good fit for what I want. I will probably just stick to my .06, I've never had a problem. Maybe when my money changes this is something I might look into again

This round would just cost to much money for me right now.

The cartridge was designed to arrive at 1000 meters with enough energy to penetrate 5 layers of military body armor and still make the kill. Crazy

The way to make the 338 cost effective is to rent it out to hunters who hunt big, or dangerous game.

During moose season, mine rents for 500 a week. For those going after griz, the price is higher.....
