Default All things (American) Football
Anything random about football. College, NFL, Canadian League (snicker)

I know college football just ended but there is still plenty to talk about. NFL playoffs...Heathers Jets taking on PJs Patriots.

In the last 24 hours Cam Newton and Nick Fairley both declared for the NFL draft.

Alabama's 2011 recruiting class is rated #2 by Rivals.com even after losing a 5* to Auburn last weekend.

Oregon gave Auburn all they wanted and should be a pre-season top 5.

And maybe even AUFred and retro will admit Nick Saban did a good job on the BCS game offering guest analysis.

No wins against MI ST or the Buckeyes, plus the NCAA violation for exceeding practice/conditioning time limits did him in I guess.

Yeah I know, just trying to get a rise out of CFL fans and get them posting.

Are we talking Titans or Volunteers?

I tuned Saban out... every time I see him on TV with that smug look on his face, I want to punch him.

Far from a Saban fan here. I thought he did better in the post-game discussion than the pre-game or halftime.

Well thats still a compliment but I understand your predicament. I find myself in-capable of saying one good thing about Chizik.

Vols
I don't think anyone expected anything but a re-building year in Knoxville. I was surprised they even got to a bowl game. I agree they beat themselves against LSU and NC butOregon, Florida and Alabama put it on them pretty good.

How impressed were you all with Tyler Bray? Stepping in as a tall, skinny true freshman, and making some big throws and playing relatively well for his age and experience level.

I ask cause he's a local kid, and we hear all about him on the news still, and we heard all about him when he was in high school as well. I kinda wish we had been able to get him, but we have our own 4-star QB that takes over the starting job this year.

First off in your honor I will pull for Fresno St. They don't play anyone that would create a conflict of interest for me.

I live in TN, and though I do follow the Vols (so I can effectively argue with my wifes co-workers) I am an adamant Bama fan.

But to answer your question I thought the skinny shit did good, but I hope they can protect him because he is a string bean. Their offense took a huge leap forward when he took Simm's place as the starter. I didn't remember that he was from Cali. I think the Clausens were too.

Tennessee got a verbal from Marcus Jackson during the Under Armour all star game. Good pickup for Dooley.http://www.volnation.com/2011/01/05/...-to-tennessee/

We play Ole Miss here this season, so I'd expect that you'd be rooting for us to win that game. Since they won't have Jeremiah fucking Masoli this season, I think we should be able to beat them.

Yeah, Bray is from Kingburg... which is about 15 minute north of where I live in Visalia and 20 minutes south of Fresno.

But while Bray has a lot of tools and upside... we've got Derek Carr, David Carr's brother, whom we refer to as DC2. From all outward appearances, he's stronger, faster, reads defenses better, and has a quicker release than his brother did in his senior year, and DC2 is just going to be a redshirt sophomore this year. He runs something like a 4.59 40 and set the Fresno State QB record for the shuttle. I don't have his times for the shuttle, but it's apparently faster than Ebahn Feathers (our 3rd QB last year, who left the program because he couldn't hack it academically), and his was a 4.41, but he ran a 4.38 40.

I've seen him air it out from his 30 and hit the middle-back of the endzone. O.O Now we just need a damn offensive line to keep him protected.

Whoa... what?! Wasn't last season his first? Although, I thought he was overrated, to be honest.

Saban was careful to play to the bama nation so he did not pick the game ahead of time. I thought his overall analysis was sound. I did appreciate one line. One of the talking heads made the comment Auburn would have lost if it had been a higher scoring game. Saban said, "Auburn would have scored enough points to win."

Yup... he transferred from Oregon after he was kicked off of the team. Our main problem with him was the fact that we don't defend mobile QBs super well, and we had prepared for a pro-style offense for the two weeks leading up to that game. The only problem was that Nutt decided to completely change offenses the week previous and go to an spread option. When we realized it, we started stacking the box to stop the option, and Masoli killed us on long passes, and then we got killed by your RB on dives when we started playing dime instead. It was an absolutely horrible game for us.

We get our revenge this year.

Here's my favorite recruit so far this year

Mershad Dillon - 6', 258lbs. Played QB and DE in high school... actually played every single snap other than special teams. He's a 2-star, but if he played on a better team, I would expect that to be more like a 3-star or even 4-star. The kid runs anchor for his section's 4x100 relay team. He runs an 11.2 100m, 4.9 40, and a 4.5 shuttle. He's got ridiculous speed for a kid his size, and projects as a potentially dominating LB, an edge rushing DE, or even a RB in certain packages.

Unfortunately, Pat Hill has the most vanilla mind in college football. Who else runs the ball up the middle for 8 straight plays on the 2, with their smallest RB (Robbie Rouse, 5'6", 190lbs), gets lucky on the 1st 4th down because of a penalty, and then finally gets the TD on the 2nd 4th down.

Sigh.

We need an actual offensive coordinator... right now we have a pass coordinator and a run coordinator, but Hill calls the plays. /facepalm We had such a dynamic offense in 2007 with McElwain as our OC, with Brandstater as our QB even, and then fucking Saban had to come steal him from us.
