I have to admit my irritation though lack of surprise on this. Jeter has had a very good career but he is definitely overrated.

The Yankees constantly spend more than any other franchise by a long way. They added a number one and two starter and an all star First Baseman this year. They should be ashamed that they hadn't won since 2000.

The NY reverence for Jeter is unbelievable.

Did he have the best year in his league? No
Is he the greatest player of his era? No
Should the Yankees win more than they have? Yes

I'm very irritated by this pick.

I can live with Jeter winning the award. He is the heart of the franchise that won the World Series. He's a perennial Gold Glove winner and is the best shortstop in baseball. He's one of the good guys also, giving a lot of time and money to drug and alchohol abuse prevention efforts among teenagers.

I was surprised to see that no one in baseball has won the award since 1995. When you factor in that, with the Yankees winning the Series, I think Jeter's a pretty logical choice.

In all seriousness, I don't follow any sport regularly like I do tennis and football. Although I know of Derek Jeeter, and his squeaky clean reputation, I don't enough about his season to agree or disagree.

Meh.

"Hates" is too mild a word, Missin'! Even "despises", "abhors" and "loathes" don't quite sum up my feelings about steroid users, and the damage they inflict both on sports, and on the kids that look up to these guys, and then think they need to juice on order to be successful.

There's a very good point in there. Everyone knows about his squeaky clean image. Jeter won the award on squeaky clean image and the legend of the Yankees.

Jeter did not win MVP and should not have won. Joe Mauer, a catcher for Minnesota rightfully won MVP. Big hitting stats in baseball are on base pct. and slugging pct. Mauer's on base was .444 and Jeter's was .406. Mauer's slugging was .587 and Jeter's was .465.

The Yankees 2009 payroll was $201 million. Second was the Mets at $149 million. Mauer's team, the Minnesota Twins (who made the playoffs) was just over $65 million.

So Jeter was clearly not the best player in his league, played for a team that by far had the biggest payroll in baseball asserting a fairly significant advantage. Despite having this advantage, they won for the first time since 2000.

Jeter won his first Gold Glove in a couple of years and many serious baseball stats nerds would tell you that he won it by reputation alone. The MVP, Mauer, has won the Gold Glove at his position for the last 2 years.

I don't dislike Jeter but basically he was awarded Sportsman of The Year based purely on reputation and a clean image.

It would be like Federer winning if he was the #3 or 4 tennis player in the world.

Image shouldn't be enough to win.

-plays for a "major" sport
-he's the captain
-he has donated millions of dollars to charities including his own
-his own charities actually do make a difference
-you may hate him because he's a Yankee, but he is a class act

Charitable works and community service play a HUGE part in selection these days. (See Tim Duncan and David Robinson)

Also lets face it, only 7 non-US citizens have ever won the award since it began in 1954.

Even if Nadal had won all the majors and the gold medal last year, Phelps still would have won it. Olympic year - US Olympic athlete takes the prize.
