Default Let's not forget Modern Pentathlon!
With all the discussion going on about our poor performance in the main fencing events, just thought it might be a good idea to post a wee reminder that we've still got one British fencer left to compete for an Olympic medal this Saturday. Never watched modern pentathlon, quite looking forward to it!

Who else will be tuning in to support Mhairi Spence?

More than one, we've got Sam Murray who, with bronze at the worlds to go with Mhairi's gold, is a good shout for a medal here too. Plus the blokes on Sunday (I think it's Nick Woodbridge and Sam Weale who are competing).

Just so you know it is the men's event on Saturday and the women's on Sunday.

Also, don't forget about the Irish athletes Arthur Lanigan O'Keeffe and Natalya Coyle also competing. There have been quite a few people from fencing who have been training with them for the past 2 weeks.

My lady wife for one, she is down in London as a scorekeeper.

Somewhat further off, but we also have seven fencers in the paralympics. Looking forward to that since I will be a scorekeeper for the event.

Heh...I met Lanigan-O’Keeffe when I was working the armory for the Palm Springs World Cup a couple of years ago....first time there'd been a pentathlon world cup on US soil in 10 years.

I was working the gabrit doing the weapon checks...had the most trouble with the French, Italians, Germans, and Russians (gee....what a surprise!). The Irish team was great to deal with...easy-going, understanding when something came up, etc.

During a lull in people coming in, he asked me if I could engrave his name inside the guard of his weapons. Sure....it's slow....what's the last name?

He tells me....I tell him he'd better write it down so I don't get it wrong, given the length.

He says to just put his initials in....Asok.

I then ask him in my WORST Irish accent "Since when is ASOK an Irish name?"

We all got a good laugh out of that!

If you're listening to the commentary here, I bet you're taking back everything you said about Bash and Graham Bell last week! Neither of them seems to know the rules at all! Loss of a metre in 2nd bout left them both mystified!

The commentator is far less irritating, but has a much easier job (only epee).

Neither of them seems to know the rules at all! ..or technique:
"Oh a beautiful circular sixte!" - no, sweetie, it was a disengage attack with opposition into the quarte line!

Thought I'd just draw attention to the fact that Sam Murray managed to win the silver medal in the women's event today. Mhairi Spence finished 21st.

Quite enjoyed watching the fencing parts this morning and yesterday.
