Japan beat Germany 41 - 40 Joppich gets a yellow card
 

In an very tight match, Japan equalized against Germany in the team foil 40 - 40 in the last second of time, it had to be seen to be believed.

Joppich in the extra minute of time with Japan having priority ( I seem to recall) scores what looks like a hit, but it's called as parry reposte off target.

Joppich then scores a clean hit, but then the president gives him a yellow card so the hit doesn't count, I didn't see why that was, neither did Joppich.

Japan then scored the winning hit, by marginally starting the attack first.

Did anyone see it and explain why they think Joppich was given a yellow card? I can only thing covering or turning his back maybe

It looked like the referee said for ducking, but there must have been 20 instances which were the same or worse which unpunished. The Germans were very hard done by in my opinion.

It was substitution of target by dropping his head forward. His first attack failed, he ducked his head and then hit with the second. The movement was slight, but you could see it on the replay.

It's the fact that the tip bounces off the mask that makes ducking so useful/annoying! No white-light comes up at all; making mask target wouldn't help in any case. I happen to think Joppich was very hard done by - his duck wasn't extreme by any means, in fact it was pretty standard for him - Ota missed, simple.

At the end of watching 2 full days of the foil at the Olympics (MF and MFT) I was extremely threadders with the suprious challenges. I'm firmly of the opinion that you should only be able to challenge on occasions where both lights come up and it is the phrasing that is in question. Everything else should be left to the referees and assistants. It's quite tedious for the spectators.
