I think that song does lay out the likely thoughts of Judas well, OTC. Judas is the supposed villain but does he have a choice?
The song I referred to was "Jesus Christ Superstar" which I believes ends the show. It is more irreverent but does raise some interesting issues (Did you mean to die like that? Was that a mistake or did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?) When JCS first came out, we listened to it in high school theology class (hey it was 1970, even nuns and priests were cool then). |

Of course: Jesus was god, and this was god's plan. It couldn't have happened without Judas' sacrifice too (you know he dies also right?) The beauty of this film is that it shows the interconnectedness of Judas & Jesus elegantly. |

That is a good question that deserves its own thread. In a nutshell tho, no, we don't. Other than the theological enigma just shown, our subconscious decides things before our consciousness. Surgical experiments have demonstrated that for decades, and fMRIs support that conclusion. |

I like JC Superstar Judas. If Judas casting as a black man is supposed to be a negative, Andrew Lloyd Weber and the director pulled a Milton Paradise Lost "gave the Devil all the best lines" move. I mean aside from the Garden of Gethesmeme(sp?) song, Jesus's songs are pretty weak. And Judas gets the last word/song/overture.
Thought the movie was "eh"; but I wanted to throw out there Harvey Keitel's Judas from "The Last Temptation of Christ", where his Judas is basically a political/Zionist radical who thinks Jesus may be bad for the movement and the cause would be better off with him dead. Anyone remember National Geographic's unveiling of the Gospel of Judas a few years back? I thought the only way they'd really make the money they were hoping from their publication and publicity would be if they had someone like George Lucas or Michael Bay gives some "notes" and have a rewrite: Actual Gospel of Judas: at some point Jesus pulls Judas aside and explains the whole plan in the context of a long theological discussion that's of more interest to theologians than every day people. The rewrite: Judas and Jesus flee the last supper pursued by Imperial Helicopter Gunships. They take refuge in a network of canyons, narrowly avoiding a barrage of Roman rockets, whose explosion gives rise to a lava flow. In a breather, Jesus explains to Judas "God's plan." Enraged at what he sees as Jesus's abandonment of the movement, Judas engages Jesus in a lightsaber battle around the lava flow. In tears mixing love and hatred Judas cries that Jesus was "the chosen one" as he attempts to strike down his mentor. Peter, Paul and Mary show up in the Millenium Falcon, rescuing Jesus and leaving Judas to burn. The rescue mission is intercepted by Roman Imperial forces and after being beaten down by Emperor Pilate's force lightning bolts Jesus is crucified in carbonite, which you know is more easy to resurrect oneself from than actual death, so at least there's one aspect there lending greater credence to the story. In all seriousness, there's a good radio play you can find streaming online called "Resurrection Rashomon" which tells the story of Easter as a series of monologues from a range of POV's (Pilate, Peter, a centurion, Mary, etc.) as if they were told in the days immediately after the crucifixion. Peter's is my favorite with its explanation of the "real reasons" Christ called him "my rock" and why Peter didn't start some uprising after the arrest. You all know Andrew Lloyd Weber is the heir to the grilling empire, right? |

By the way, One Night in Bangkok is from the musical "Chess." My science knowledge may be sparse but my musical theatre knowledge is excellent. I'm a nerd too and proud of it! The original Judas, and One Night in Bangkok singer, was Murray Head. He, coincidentally, is the older brother of the actor Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Nerds unite! "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints. The sinners have much more fun." See you in the afterlife. |

You missed the last line of that verse: "Only the good die young." Are you trying to tell us something, OldMama? Well she did say, "see you in the afterlife." Maybe she's posting from beyond and holding us all a seat. |

Yes! And don't you think it's odd that both brothers have that background in musical theater? Anthony Head doing a run in Rocky Horror, and more recently in the abysmal film version of Repo: The Genetic Opera (not his fault). Well she did say, "see you in the afterlife." Maybe she's posting from beyond and holding us all a seat. Oh good! I didn't know the afterlife had internet access. I was worried. |

It's not any more surprising than trying to imagine stately and respectable Anthony Head dressing up in fishnet stocking, a corset, and hells, and strutting about the stage. Oh good! I didn't know the afterlife had internet access. I was worried. Haven't you seen (Comcast)Xfinity's advertising? Clearly they're now operating beyond the Pearly Gates. |
