Nobody except those nice German boys, of course. Maybe this article is what Pat Robertson was referring to. If so, it makes sense: http://www.americandaily.com/article/95 |

Its worth pointing out that "Napoleon the Third" wasn't even born yet.
Funny thing is, it was a jewel when the French ran the place. Oh, so you've traveled through time to tell us that? I'm guessing that sailors must have loved visiting there...oh wait, they didn't, because it was poor, smelly, and full of plague and yellow fever. And that website you linked to was worth a laugh, I like the natural cancer cure ads, it really adds to the authenticity of lunacy. |

Its worth pointing out that "Napoleon the Third" wasn't even born yet. In the 1700s, Haiti supplied 50% of all Europe's sugar. They were doing so well they were exporting considerably. They were known as the breadbasket of the Caribbean. But that was when the French ran the place. Ever since 1802, when the French were slaughtered, raped and (French women and children) sold into slavery by those involved in the slave rebellion in Haiti, it has been as you see it today. The US has foolishly come to their rescue several times since, including in 1914, only for the country to descend into insanity, poverty and superstition again and again. Oh, and here is a very interesting 2002 video about life in Haiti. Make sure you didn't have dinner yet: YouTube - Raboteau Revolt Trust me, these are not the kinds of people you want to help, except maybe with birth control. |

I don't shock easily, but I am utterly shocked and revolted that you would post such an article. It's quite beyond the pale of civilized and intelligent discussion. |

Oh, so you've traveled through time to tell us that? The timing of this earthquake is particularly tragic because Haiti was perhaps coming around a bit, and was one of the only Caribbean nations experiencing steady economic growth for the past few years. This will set them back. |

Not to get too far off topic, but it actually was quite a wealthy colony at the time due to trade in coffee, sugar, and indigo. Some economists believe it was the wealthiest place in the Americas in the late 18th century. How it came to be and has remained so poor, even relative to other Caribbean nations, is a bit of a puzzle. Part of the answer might be that after the slave revolt, the US and other nations isolated Haiti politically and didn't trade with them. Who ran Haiti when it was a properous colony? Who runs it now? There is your answer. |

It's not a puzzle at all. |

If it's true, that's all that matters. Think of me as similar to Simon Cowell: I say the truth, people boo, but in the end, they have to admit I was right. |

Funny thing is, it was a jewel when the French ran the place. Look at it ever since. Out of all the colonial powers, why is it that Portugal came out unscathed by it... except for Angola (but that was a civil war, Portugal really didn't have much to do with it).. |

Yes the Portuguese just sold slaves to other people, tucked the money in their purses, then washed their hands of colonial problems. All very tidy, wasn't it? That was the marketing plan that Spain used, then the British copied it... which then turned into a convienent way of booting far-right Puritanical Christian nutbags off the British Isles (America) and later as a prison-population control measure (Australia). |
