There are a lot of really outrageous claims for miracles. I think all the claims do more harm than good for organized religions. If some god spends the energy to make a statue drink milk, or a piece of toast look like jesus, or a stain that spells out allah, what does that really say about god, considering all of the atrocities that happen on a daily basis in this world while he etches is son into a piece of bread?
I can't find the article, but the Catholic Church had to retract the claims about the miracles at Lourdes, France where people would supposedly heal after bathing in a nearby spring. Some scientist looked at the statistics of miracles and found that out of the cases for spontaneous cancer remission, the rates of healing were actually lower for the people that made the journey to Lourdes. I remember hearing a similar study that was funded to study prayers. The people that new they were being prayed for while in the hospital actually had more complications. The researches said it was most likely do to anxiety. I got an email a few months ago about some miracle stairs that defy gravity and where built by a mysterious man that showed up and had the name joseph. The nuns and church have some equally outrageous claims that I am sure any architect or structural engineer could dismiss in seconds. Yet the church states "No one knows how the staircase stands by itself." and they say it with a straight face while people from all over the country come to see it and dump money into the collection basket. |

This happened many years ago, I used to play poker on Friday nights at various houses. We were having an uneventful game when I had the overwhelming feeling that I should go see my parents. I got in my car and drove to their home. When I got home everything seemed normal. Both were watching TV and my mother was sipping a glass of gin, a 60's pain killer. Within seconds of sitting on the couch I heard the death rattle. She had cancer but didn't seem that close to passing. Seemed as if She was waiting for me get home and sent a message.

I've felt that way twice--like I was being led to something--and one of them was an occasion when I was very depressed and it pulled me out of my depression. |

I asked this question on another board and a man told about a time a few weeks ago when he was dissatisfied with life in Detroit and was thinking of moving to Texas. The next day, he had a wrong number call, from a store in Texas, and decided it was a sign that he should move.
So I asked if he had received a wrong number from Detroit would he have seen it as a sign to stay where he was? Or just another wrong number? He never answered. I think I ruined his magic. |
