Default Catholics : What are you giving up for Lent?
Also, do you recieve ashes and observe "no meat" on Ash Wednesday and every Friday through Lent?
I'm refraining from pornography. No joking.

I'm a recovering Catholic 21 years sober , but I think it's a good thing regardless of what religion you are to pick a month or two , and one day a week abstain from something weather it be food or a frivolous activity and do something different . Is it lent already ?

I agree with you about abstination. For the past few years (nothing to do with religion), from the beginning of January to the beginning of April, I abstain from caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and I limit my processed sugar intake to one treat a week (instead of the usual fifteen). My mind and body feel so good right now, I don't know if I want to go back to my old habits. I won't smoke or use caffeine again, and the reason being, I had my blood pressure checked recently and it was 120/80, which I'm happy with.
Lent starts on Wednesday.

I agree with Geno.

I'm not giving up anything for Lent.

I haven't done that type of thing since I was in grade school.

OK, I'm serious. I give up sarcasm.

It's tougher than you think and I try to keep it going all year, but between New Year's and Lent I find it particularly difficult. Anyway, I think I'm a better person for this. Although I don't think I'm better than anyone else for doing this, it's just a personal best.

PS: I also give up Soylent Green for Lent. But just for Lent.

I find the concept of "giving something up" to be a little misdirected. Instead, I try to use the time to do something extra--additional good deeds I wouldn't normally do, like helping old ladies cross the street, rescuing cats from trees, etc. Of course, I haven't found any old ladies or cats yet, but that doesn't stop me from trying.

As for the meat issue, I really don't follow that rule. I find it completely ridiculous that someone could go out and have a fancy lobster dinner, yet I'm not allowed to have a piece of bacon on my sandwich. I figure if my diet is what gets me condemned to hell, I'm not doing too badly.

Yes. So, are you or aren't you? Eating meat during Lent is not about going to Hell or not, it's about sacrifice and re-enforcing your faith.

This is how I see it, if Jesus was here he would say just eat bc there are others who don't have anything to eat. So I eat.

Also, do you recieve ashes and observe "no meat" on Ash Wednesday and every Friday through Lent?
I'm refraining from pornography. No joking.

So much for subtlety. Yes, I am, although I prefer the term "vaguely Catholic." I can't really be more than that because, in the words of Lewis Black, "I have thoughts. That can really $#%& up the faith thing."

Regardless of the theological basis for non-meat eating, breaking a church commandment is, by definition, a sin, which generally means a one-way ticket to damnation. I would think the Almighty would have bigger concerns than my diet, but hey, there I go again with the thinking.
