I don't know what people see when they look at a dog. Our last dog SuzyQ was a boxer. Everything about her was boxer - droopy lips, smooshed in face, docked tail, she couldn't have looked any more boxer and yet dozens of people were sure she was a pit bull.

Now we have Sadie and although her parentage is unknown, she obviously has a lot of APBT in her, I see lots of dogs on here that look just like her. And yet I've had at least 10 people tell me they are sure she is a boxer mix - what gave it away, the pointy snout, her color - black and white - her black little beady eyes, her long whippy tail. Of all the things that she might have in her mixture, I don't see any boxer at all.

We had a very large black german shepherd some years ago and more than one person thought he was a Great Dane.

Makes you wonder

Around here I get asked, "will you breed him to my dog?" (usually a blue dog) ... or ... "are you going to breed him?" ... about (but not quite) as much as, "What kind is he?". Mason is one year old ... tells ya the kind of folks we often deal with ... shoot

Default What breed's do your dogs often get mistaken for?
My girl Kali has been mistaken for a boxer mix, sometimes people think she is mixed with a small breed dog because she is only 18-19 inches at the shoulders and 65 pounds, she is acutally fairly thick for a female but people think these dogs are supposed to be huge. Other people have no idea what she is and are completely SHOCKED when I tell her and say things like "she's a pitbull???!?!? But she's so nice!".

The little one lilly used to get mistaken for a beagle when she was younger and had full drop ears. She doesn't get that anymore now that she has ncie rose ears.

True. LOL When I mention snow is an American Bulldog mix... alot of people are like 'are you sure? She looks like a pit bull to me...' :P I just shake my head.
Ugh, people here are worse I think lol they are so used to the short squatty am bullies so that is what a "pit bull" is to them. If it looks anything like a real APBT it must be a mix or some other breed lol

My favorite was

Stranger: "what type of dog"
Me: "unknown, she's a rescue"
Stranger "Oh! A Search and Rescue dog, how neat"!

a DINGO?! seriously?! That made me laugh. Wow. Too funny!
Yup. And he really thought he was right and I was wrong. Obviously he's never seen a Dingo. I've never seen one in Texas!

I heard a guy at the Vet telling his wife Bullet "looks like a Staffie crossed with a Boxer". So I said no, he's a Pitbull. So the guy said, no, his legs are too long to be a Pit.

People either think Peanut is a male pit bull puppy or have no idea what she is.

We finally got a new one last week. A guy asked me if she was an Australian Dingo.

It depends on where I'm at. If I'm in the nicer parts of town Madison is a lab to everyone. When I'm in my neighborhood people know exactly what she is. The boys on the other hand are always deemed wolves. I went to the corner store and the guy working there asked me if they were wolves and asked if I rolled up the windows because they're so vicious. I really wanted to say something along the lines of "Yeah human blood is a pain to wash out of their fur so I didn't want to take a chance."

Acheron gets called a Boxer all the time, like you just see blue boxers running around. No one offers a breed guess for Jetta but a lot of people say she's beautiful and ask if she's a "pure breed'. I've always wanted to shake them and ask "a pure bred WHAT, what pure bred could she possibly be?" And of course they get "Pit bull" all the time.
