If you don't know then she is a mutt. A mix of something. Don't know what. But she has an unknown linage so she is a Mutt.

Without papers you can only speculate.. Which means she is just a "mutt"! But in my opinion it does kind of look like she could have some kind of pit or bully breed in there.

In my opinion, from that one small pic, the dog appears to have at least a good part of Pit Bull in it. I don't see Shepherd, unless that hair is kinda long or the body shaped differently, but I just can't see it from this pic. I see Pit Bull because of the head (broad skull, good length muzzle, shading, expression, ears and expression). Hair APPEARS quite short. IF I saw a couple of side shots, I might change my mind...from this head shot, I see more Pit Bull than another breed.

Shelters almost always call a dog that looks (even a LOT!) like a Pit Bull a totally different breed OR at least a mix. There is a "fear" or something of identifying a dog as a Pit Bull because of the laws that say "looks like" a Pit Bull. Many think it's just best to not even be "able" to identify something as a Pit Bull, so as to nullify the "looks like" part.

It's sad when even breed people give in....(in my opinion)

I feel the same way... but I also understand why they do that. Lets face it, the dog has a LOT better chance of getting adopted if people read "shepard mix" instead of "pit bull mix". Plus the dog has a better chance at avoiding discrimination if the owner has proof that the shelter labled it as a shepard. It sucks, but it is kind of in the best interest of the dog, I suppose.

They may label the dog anything other than a pit or mix for reasons beyond being easier to adopt a dog that isn't a pit. In the county next to ours the law states that if a pit bull or pit mix comes into the county shelter it must be claimed by it's owner within 14 days, after that the dog is put down. They do not allow pits to be adopted out. So I can see why they would not say a dog is a pit mix even if it's obvious that it is. Some insurance companies charge higher rates if you own what they deem to be a dangerous dog. Even though our county doesn't have any breed specific rules, our vet advised us to list Sadie as a terrier mix and not mention anything about being part pit bull, even though it's very obvious that is what she is. I guess they figure better safe than sorry, so officially that is what she is a terrier mix. So I can understand why they would avoid the pit bull designation.

But to answer your question, I see more pit bull than shepherd in her. She has a very pretty face.

What if someone DOES NOT want a Pit Bull or a dog that their neighbor says "looks like" a Pit Bull? They just don't want the hassle/stigma...

A lot of people don't WANT a dog that looks like a Pit Bull. So, they get told their shelter dog is a Shepherd mix and take it home, only to have the experience the OP does -- that their dog "looks" like a Pit Bull. Back the dog goes...or worse.

My thought is that unless it has a known lineage, comes from a reputable breeder, and is registered, every pit bull is a mutt. Remember "pit bull" is a not a breed, just an umbrella term for a small handful of recognized breeds, mixes of those, and generally anything that resembles those breeds. In short, if your dog is a "pit bull", it is a mutt. If your dog is a registered APBT, AST, or ABT, it is not.

The breed HAS had it's history revised, you know that don't you...

For a hundred years, Pit Bull was the nickname for a breed and now...

If they are all "mutts" why even GO into breed characteristics? After all, they are JUST generic dogs (mutts), right?

Again, history has been revised -- you DO know that UKC does NOT register APBTs, don't you?

AND, that most pedigrees of all of them are suspect...so say "certain" people.

A shelter would be misleading any potential adopter by claiming that it is purebred if they don't have paperwork for that dog proving that it is. IMO they should throw 'mix' in there unless they have proof otherwise b/c chances are it is.

IMO that dog does not look like any Shepherd I've ever seen. Perhaps pictures from different viewpoints would change my mind, but I doubt it. If I was to pick a primary breed based solely on the picture provided, I'd say it appears to be an APBT mix.

Read more: Pit bull mix? Or just plain mutt? No it is not, thats just what un educated people like to think.
There is ONE pit bull and thats the American pit bull terrier, every other breed has a name or is a mutt.

Get a genetic test done, then you'll know for sure.

Genetic test only test for breed recognized by the AKC and since the APBT isn't even it would never come up.

Aww lame. I did it for my catahoula-aussie and it was pretty accurate, but if that's the case for APBT, then that's lame! Still, though, I might mark it as staffordshire, then at least you'd know what it's mixed with!
