"You Don't Seem Like A Pit Bull Type"
Lord, if I had a dollar for every time I've heard this.
OK, I get it (sort of). I'm a very stereotypical DC type: young(ish) single female, I wear suits and high heels to work every day, shop at places like banana republic and ann taylor, listen to NPR, eat pretentious things like kale and quinoa, and drive a prius, for chrissakes. I can't help it! But apparently the only thing abnormal about me is that I own a pit bull, and people think it's hilarious. "A pit bull? you? REALLY?" It makes me wonder what a pit bull type is. Anyone else here the type or not the type? |
I have noticed that when I get that comment all my tattoos are covered up. People are so quick to judge. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png

I would normally describe myself as a quiet bookworm, but I guess that doesnt really fit any more. I like warplanes, motorcycles, pitbulls and guns. But you wouldnt think im that badass just by looking at me! I'm too school for cool. :P
arent I sweet? http://i1024.photobucket.com/albums/...OWL/me_gun.jpg (whooo! GIANT FRIKIN' GUN!! ... THAT FLIES!!!) |
I would assume it's because people stereo type that look with high class, snobby and prude and they associate pit bulls with gangster dirt bags.
|
Hahaha.... I get the same reaction. It appears I'm too girly to own a "killer breed" as some would call it. But I tell them first they aren't "killers" and YES I own a Pitbull! Lol.
But I'm with you, I'd like to know too! Lol |
I look like a dirty hobo so nobody's usually surprised I'm a pit bull person.
|
I get that all the time too.. people don't really expect to see a tiny little white girl walking 3 Pit Bull type dogs LOL.
|
i guess most would consider me a weird tomboy/redneck. i prolly seem like the type. never had someone say that to me though
|
I've gotten that reaction, and I don't even have my pit yet.
I have a catahoula (who is 10x more difficult than any pit I've worked with), and people think he's a powderpuff because he's so handsome! I tell them, no, he's a monster, my pit is going to be my easy dog! Im a restaurant manager at a fairly upscale place, and no one who works with me can believe I'm adopting a "vicious, manly dog". Lol |
TBH - its all about stereotyping
here in AU if you say you own a Pitty people look at you differently straight away. I work for a global company earning good $$$ and part co-owner of printing company in Sydney I wear suits everyday and look presentable at all times. but as soon I wear casual clothing and walking my dogs, even at dog parts, other dog owners and other people who do not have any idea of who I am, they loo at me differently even at Dog Schools - I always get from the trainer (well obviously old school Aussie) that I have to train my dogs more than other dogs in the class, because she said that "my dogs are like guns potentially to make damages to other human or animal". I said to her "all dogs are lethal weapons if you brought them up that way" |
About 6 years ago ... I prolly would have told you myself ... that I WAS NOT the pit bull type ... then there was Rowdy.
Messed that all to hell up http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif |
Ive had that myself as well. To people who know me know its not that far fetched because theres a lot of things Im into that people would never guess based on my looks. My husband thought I was a high maintenance priss when he first saw a picture of me (we met through myspace lol) He thought I was pretending to be into racing for the guys.. then I beat him at karting http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png Took him to the desert and got him into riding quads (he rode on flat hard packed stuff, but compared to where I grew up riding thats nothing and he quickly learned that). I like to dress up (ok well my version of dressing up would make a lot of you laugh but for my family/hubby its dressing up lol we are real causal people) and look nice but I have no problem getting dirty and working on cars and camping in a tent in the middle of a desert. So for this scrawny white girl with hair to her waist and 2 young boys its not that odd... but most think it is.

I get the opposite. I'm a tomboy and have been since childhood, I dress in mens clothing, I have tattoo's, piercings and a mohawk and I'm a bit heavy set. Often times I get asked if I fight my boy, I've never been told I'm not the pitbull type, instead people see me as the mean type who owns a pitbull to be "tough" which is not the case. I tend to shrug it off, most of these people aren't worth trying to talk to.
|
I love seeing the look on peoples faces when they ask what kind of dogs I have!
|
http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif I get it. Polite barrista & computer fraud by day, hell hound owner by night.
It was pointed out to me recently that I am not stereotypical. I'm generally smart, a bit old school & respectful to others, well read & able to hold my own in most conversations. I hold the door open for strangers too. But. I love motorcycles, spearfishing & Bull Terriers. When I'm spotted with dog I often get "the look" and asked why I have her. I tell the truth, they are Gawjus!!!! |
I live in a pretty pit bull friendly area and don't really get any reactions either way. Although my friend's now-husband told me a few years back that he thought my choice of breed was fitting considering my personality. I'm a tomboy, take no crap kinda person. I've also been told by people online (that I don't know) that I'm not a criminal so they don't know why I'd own my dog http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.png but in person, around here, nothing.
|
I have not had anyone directly say to me that im "not the type" However my teenage half-mexican brother in law, if he is with me..people ask him to pet his dog. Definitely a stereotype.
|
I don't doubt that I have probably had odd comments/remarks said about Zoey and I as a pair, but I've never had anything close to someone actually stating anything similar as, "you don't look like a pit bull type" to my face. I just get told from time to time by my sister that, I like "manly" dogs http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.png. I don't consider myself a one single "type" of anything, within my interests, passions, and preferences (other than being straight). Surely, a tiny girl wearing fitted or casual work out clothes, walking a pit bull with a big spiked collar and chain lead, is not a common thing for passerby's to see haha. I just only receive compliments, for how beautiful or nice looking of a pit bull, Zoey is.
Now the internet, that is another story. People are always typically stereotypical towards me, when they see that I own Zoey and how I am a "dog fighter", "neglectful", thinking I am "bad ass" with the collar etc. |
I get that a lot, I'm kind of preppy, love wearing highheels and doing my hair. I get asked whats a girl like you doin with a pit all the time. Its kinda annoying.
